Lafayette’s White (Strath Haven), Martin named Patriot League First Team; 5 others from Philly on top squad

Lafayette seniors Rachel Martin and Ana White (Strath Haven) were named to the All-Patriot League team, the league announced on Thursday. Martin and White were among 12 players selected.

White was selected as the Patriot League Midfielder of the Year last spring after leading the Leopards in points (68), assists (22), ground balls (47) and draw controls (95). The senior was also a key part of the defense, causing a team-high 34 turnovers.

Martin started all 18 games in the defense for the Leopards. She was second to White in both ground balls (30) and caused turnovers (15). The New Jersey native was an All-Patriot League Second-Team selection last spring.

The Leopards were tabbed to finish sixth in the Patriot League this season. Lafayette finished 9-9 overall last season and earned a berth in the Patriot League Tournament. The Maroon and White open the season on Feb. 15 at Marist.

Lehigh has been predicted eighth in the Patriot League preseason poll, garnering 38 points, the Mountain Hawks eye a return to the Patriot League Tournament for the first time since 2011 and make their sixth tournament in the last eight years. This year’s league tournament has expanded to six teams with the addition of Loyola and Boston University.

Newcomer Loyola was predicted to win the league, receiving 15 first-place votes and 127 points. The Greyhounds were followed by Navy with 113 points and three first-place votes. Boston University came in third (94) then Holy Cross (76), American (72) and Lafayette (61). Colgate (47), Lehigh (38) and Bucknell (20) rounded out the poll.

Marlee Paton of Loyola was named preseason Offensive Player of the Year while Annie Foky earned Defensive honors. The complete preseason All-Patriot League Team was unveiled as well.

Lehigh is deep into preseason practice with high anticipation for the 2014 campaign. The squad returns four of its top five scorers from a season ago, led by junior and two-time All-Patriot League honoree Carli Sukonik (Harriton) who posted 25 goals and three assists in 11 games last season. Sophomore Megan Paytas had 22 points (11 goals, 11 assists), sophomore Kendall Garden 16 (13 goals, three assists) and senior Chelsea Retaleato 11 (eight goals, three assists).

Junior All-Patriot League honoree Lauren Willcox helps spearhead the defense, posting a team-high 18 caused turnovers last season. Senior Alexandra Fitzpatrick returns in goal after starting all 16 games a season ago. She posted a 12.13 GAA and 42.3 save percentage after returning from injury. Fitzpatrick was one of the nation’s best goalkeepers as a freshman, owning an 8.66 GAA and 50.6 save percentage.

The Mountain Hawks open their season on Feb. 15 against Wagner at 12 p.m. Lehigh plays its first three games at home before hitting the road for the first time Mar. 1 at New Hampshire.
