The South Jersey and surrounding lacrosse community is mourning the passing of Katherine “Katie” Marie Kernan, 19, a Shawnee High graduate and longtime member of the South Jersey Select Lacrosse Club who fought brain cancer the past 18 months.
Katie passed away from her battle with brain cancer on Saturday, July 19, 2014, at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Born in Stratford, NJ, Katie moved to Medford, NJ at the age of 3. She attended Cranberry Pines and Taunton Forge Elementary School, and then moved onto Medford Memorial Middle School and Shawnee High School.
She graduated from Shawnee in 2013 after being diagnosed with cancer in January of her senior year. An avid lacrosse player, Katie was a member of the South Jersey Select team for 6 years, and had accepted a scholarship at Fairfield University in Connecticut.
Relatives and friends of Katie may call on Wednesday from 5-8 PM, at St. Mary of the Lakes R.C. Church, 40 Jackson Rd., Medford, NJ. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:30AM, at the church. Private burial will be held following the mass for family members only.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Karing for Katie, c/o 4 Hampshire Way, Medford, NJ 08055. A single donation will be made in her name on August 1, 2014, to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of South Jersey. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Mathis Funeral Home, Medford, NJ.
Katie was the daughter of Sharon and Michael Kernan; beloved sister to Michael, William, Bridget and Patrick Kernan; beloved granddaughter, cousin, niece and good friend to many, many others.
