The Garnet Valley girls’ lacrosse team clinched at least a tie for the Central League championship today by defeating host Conestoga, 10-8, in the completion of a game suspended Thursday due to inclement weather.
The win gave the second-ranked Jaguars (14-1 overall) a 10-0 mark in the Central League. They can wrap up the title outright and finish undefeated by defeating Upper Darby Tuesday at home. Garnet Valley won Central League crowns in 2011 and 2012.
The Jags led, 9-6, when the game resumed today with just under 18 minutes. Conestoga (8-8, 6-4) drew within 9-8 on goals by Liz Scott and Maggie Friel, but Dana Davis converted with just over a minute to play to make it 10-8.
“We knew what was riding on this game and in the beginning of the (play today) everyone was really stressed out,” said Garnet Valley senior defender Molly Savage. “We had to find our composure; we always do.”
Savage (Drexel signee) said the Jaguars were disappointed with failing to win a league title and make the state playoffs last year after winning back-to-back state crowns in 2011-12.
“We had a lot to prove this year,” she said. “Last year was definitely a building year for us and this year we finally found our spot where we like to be.”
Sabrina Fusco led the Jaguars with four goals while Davis and Haley Warden each had a pair.
“We had to prove everybody wrong,” said Warden, a James Madison signee who added five draw controls. “Nobody thought Garnet Valley would be this successful, but we know how much work we put in the off-season to get us where we are.
“We definitely gained maturity this year. We have nine seniors and we have more composure on offense and we are more confident with the ball.”
Lexy King had two goals and an assist and Scott scored twice for the Pioneers.
