Matt Milici scored off a feed from Matt Vetter for the go-ahead goal with 3:53 to play as host Central bucks East edged Holy Ghost prep, 10-9, Thursday in a District 1 boys’ second-round playoff.
The win advances the fourth-seeded Patriots (17-3) into Saturday’s quarterfinals against defending district champion Avon Grove, a 12-8 winner over Spring-Ford. The Game is set for 11 a.m. at Harriton in the first of four quarterfinal games (the top five teams in District 1 advance to states).
Holy Ghost (12-7) tied the game at 8-8 when Ryan Kovak scored with 5:47 left to play. After Milici (two goals, two assists) put East ahead, Ryan Brown scored a key insurance goal with 2:16 remaining.
The Firebirds added one more as Bennett Zaba (one assist) got his fourth goal in the final minutes.
CBE’s Vetter led with three goals and two assists and got his hat trick with 8:20 left in the fourth. Jack Auteri was 13-for-21 on face offs and Dustin Buchanan (3 gb’s 5 CT’s), Tyler Butler (8 gb’s, 4 CT) and Mike Eveland (3 gb’s, 1 CT) led the defense.
Michael Major had two goals and an assist and Alex Yake added two goals while Greg Price made 14 saves for Holy Ghost.
