A defensive battle turned into a an exciting back-and-forth game – and then the lighting hit.
St. Joseph’s Prep and host La Salle saw their Catholic League showdown halted tonight after three periods when several strikes of lightning came closer. The game will be finished Friday at PW or at La Salle if its field is deemed playable. The game will resume at 3 p.m.
The first half saw St. Joe’s Prep (9-3, 6-0) seize a 2-1 lead. The Hawks took a 3-1 advantage on a goal by Griffin Fleming, but La Salle (6-6, 6-0) tied it on tallies by Stephen Hudak and Mitch Soufleris.
Pat Walsh gave SJ Prep a 4-3 edge, but Michael Rihm and Aidan Kerrigan put the Explorers ahead late in the third period before Walsh tied it with 57 seconds to play in the stanza.
Then as soon as the quarter ended a bolt of lightning was seen in the distance. Soon after, the lightning was closer and the referees suspended the game.
peter Gayhardt and Steve Bradley also scored for the Prep and Chris Hladzuk (one assist) also scored for La Salle.
Both goalies, Colin MacDougall and Mike Marchese of St. Joe’s Prep, were outsanding in the first half and have 9 saves.
