Will Manganiello scored his 150th career goal with 1:36 to play in overtime Wednesday night as host Penncrest defeated Bishop Shanahan, 9-8, in a cold but thrilling non-league boys’ lacrosse game involving two undefeated teams.
The Lions, ranked No. 5 by Phillylacrosse.com, improved to 11-0 – their best start in school history. No. 4 Shanahan fell to 6-1.
Manganiello (four goals, one assist) scored after a steal by Liam O’Donnell led to a break up field to Ryan Kinnard. Robert Logan set a pick and Manganiello made a split dodge before bouncing on past Jason Yoquinto.
“It was a battle and it ended exactly the way we wanted it to,” said Manganiello, a senior headed to Delaware. “We were looking at this game from the beginning of the season and to say we’re 11-0 for the first time in school history is incredible.”
Penncrest tied the game with 2:42 left in regulation on a goal by Drew Hanna (two goals, one assist). John Mehok (two goals) had given Shanahan the 8-7 edge after Manganiello tied it to open the fourth period.
Dylan Protesto had a goal and won 13 of 19 face-offs for Penncrest. Dylan McCleaft was strong in goal with 11 saves.
“It was an amazing game by both teams and each team had the opportunity to win it,” said Penncrest coach Wayne Matsinger. “We were very lucky to the pick ball off and get Mango a look against a short stick. He made a great bounce shot and squeaked it in.”
For Shanahan, Alex Wagner had two goals and an assist, Pat Corcoran scored twice and Dylan Alderman had a goal and two assists.
