With a 5-0 record the 4th graders of the Philadelphia Freedom 2021 squad won the Philly Showdown at Germantown Academy on July 14th.
The team overcame sweltering heat as it used strong goaltending and defense (that allowed only 3.4 goals per game) and an offense that generated 11 goals per game.
The Freedom squad played a very tough Philadelphia Fever team in the championship and claimed a hard fought 9-5 victory.
The Fever took a 2-0 lead, but attackman Braeden Lange scored on a great feed from Reilly Dugan inside. Sean Kaiser then scored two goals to give the Freedom a 3-2 lead and PJ Oppenheimer scored off a look from Matt Traynor before halftime.
In the second half Fever was able to draw to within one goal at 5-4, but Freedom pulled away on goals from Luke Wetzel and Braedon Karpathios, another from Oppenheimer (bringing his tournament total close to 20), Dugan, and another from Kaiser, his third. Assists were delivered off the sticks of Matt Traynor (16 overall), Will Peden, Karpathios, Lange, Kaiser, Josh Lee, Justin Turley, Dylan McMahon, and Egan Butala.
The Freedom defense was led y goalies Keegan Billie and Thomas O’Malley , both making some great saves. Colin Gucwa, Aiden Coulter, Max Neeson, Drew Deves, Tyler Robinson, JD Shimer and Jayden Rowe paced the defense.
This was the final tournament of the summer for the Freedom 2021 team, finishing with a record of 16-4 over four tournaments. The team was led by an attack unit of Sean Kaiser, PJ Oppenheimer, Braedon Karpathios, Braeden Lange, and Dylan McMahon, a midfield unit of Justin Turley, Reilly Dugan, Josh Lee, Matt Traynor, Egan Butala, Matt Traynor, Rylee Howard, Luke Wetzel, and Will Peden, and a defensive unit of Colin Gucwa, Max Neeson, Jayden Rowe, JD Shimer, Aiden Coulter, Drew Deves, and Tyler Robinson with the goalie tandem of Keegan Billie and Thomas O’Malley.
