Women’s recruits: Wissahickon’s Gomez among signees at Hofstra

Hofstra University Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach Shannon Smith announced today that 11 student-athletes have signed their National Letters of Intent with the University and will join the women’s lacrosse program beginning with the 2014-15 campaign.

The group that will begin their academic and athletic careers at Hofstra in the fall of 2014 includes: Carlee Ancona, Carolyn Carrera, Grayson Corbett, Jessica Geiersbach, Zoe Gomez (Wissahickon), Katie Kirk, Shea McAvoy, Elena Schorr, Amanda Seekamp, Drew Shapiro and Samantha Torrico.

Carrera has been named a finalist for the Wendy’s High School Heisman award. One of only 12 finalists nationally for this prestigious award, Carrera will find out if she is one of the two National Winners in mid-December. The Wendy’s High School Heisman Award celebrates high school seniors across the country who excel in academics, athletics and community leadership.

“We are really happy to announce the signing of eleven elite student-athletes for the 2014-2015 Hofstra Women’s Lacrosse team,” commented Smith. “From top to bottom this class is filled with athleticism and speed. As a coaching staff we cannot wait to coach this class. We expect this group to do great things at Hofstra as we look to build a successful program. We want to wish them all the best of luck in their senior year.”

Ancona (Great River, NY), a 5-4 midfielder, attends East Islip High School and has played lacrosse throughout her scholastic career. Ancona has been named all-county in lacrosse in both 2012 and 2013.

Carrera (Riverhead, NY), a 5-8 midfielder, is one of the top players to come out of Long Island. During her three-year lacrosse career at Riverhead High School she has totaled 126 goals, 55 assists, 313 draw controls, 335 ground balls and 132 caused turnovers. She was recently named New York’s female State Winner of the 2013 Wendy’s High School Heisman Award, given annually to one male and one female student, nationally, for excellence in athletics, academics and community leadership.

Corbett (Ellicott City, MD), a 5-4 midfielder, currently attends Wilde Lake High School and tallied 41 goals in 2012 and 49 goals and 15 assists in 2011. This past season she compiled 86 goals, 83 draw controls and 34 ground balls. She has been named first team all-county and Howard County’s top scorer.

Geiersbach (West Babylon, NY), a 5-3 attacker, is a two-time all-county performer in lacrosse for West Babylon High School.

Gomez (Ambler, PA), a 5-9 attacker, is a student at Wissahickon High School. During her junior season she had 61 goals and 41 assists after tallying 53 goals and 32 assists in 2012. Gomez was named to the Under Armour Team Philly in 2012 and was a second team All-Suburban One American selection in 2011 and 2012. This past season she earned first team All-Suburban One American accolades.

Kirk (Bay Shore, NY), a 5-11 attacker/midfielder, has played four years of lacrosse at Bay Shore High School. She was named to the all-division team in 2013 and was twice an all-tournament selection in 2011 and 2012.

McAvoy (Setauket, NY), a 5-10 midfielder, attends Ward Melville High School and has played four years of lacrosse for the Patriots. She has helped her team advance to the county championships in each of the last two seasons.

Schorr (Medina, OH), a 5-3 midfielder, has played lacrosse for four seasons at Medina High School. A underclass elite for the Midwest Team at the 2013 Under Armour All-America Tournament that was held Fourth of July weekend in Baltimore, Maryland, Schorr has helped her team to a combined 30-4-2 record over the last two seasons as they were two-time OSLA State Champions.

Seekamp (East Hampton, NY), a 5-7 defender/midfielder, plays scholastically at East Hampton High School. She has played four years of lacrosse and was all-league twice and all-county two times. Seekamp has also been named team MVP two times in her career.

Shapiro (Bedford, NH), a 5-5 attacker, has played five seasons of lacrosse for Bedford High School. She scored 74 goals last season and 79 in 2012. In addition she added 22 assists a season ago and 28 in 2012. She has twice earned the Bulldog Award – Lacrosse MVP and has earned all-state honors on multiple occasions.

Torrico (Setauket, NY), a 5-1 attacker, is a student at Ward Melville and has earned the New York State Scholar-Athlete Award on three separate occasions.
