The Second Annual EVANFEST Lacrosse Banquet will be held on Thursday, Nov. 14 at Drexelbrook Catering in Drexel Hill.evanfest

Once again, the event will feature big-name speakers and a program that fittingly honors a youth tournament and foundation in Evan Brady’s name that has raised over half a million in funds for families with children that have life-threatening diseases.

Individual banquet tickets are $85; the event runs from, 6:30-9 p.m. Click here to purchase a ticket. The first hour of the program features an open open and time for attendees to mingle.

Evan Brady was a youth lacrosse standout who battled osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) for several years until passing away at the age of 19 in 2005. The eighth annual EVANFEST lacrosse festival will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2014 at Malvern Prep. EVANFEST draws more than 40 boys’ youth lacrosse teams in the U-15 and U-13 divisions.

The Master of Ceremonies for the event again is Philly lacrosse standout goalie Brian Dougherty, the head coach at Chestnut Hill College and a recent inductee into the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame. The special guest speaker features Penn State coach Jeff Tambroni, who guided the Nittany Lions to the NCAA tournament last season.

Andrew Mackrides, who starred at Penn State and was a close friend of Evan’s at Malvern Prep, has been closely involved in the foundation since its inception by Bill Brady, Evan’s father. He thanked the lacrosse community for its support.

“First of all, the Philadelphia lacrosse community has been absolutely incredible to be a part of it,” Mackrides said. “The EVANFEST tournament has grown and the banquet is a chance for us to reach out to friends and family.

“Last year was our first year and we didn’t know how it would go. Of course, after seeing how successful it was and the money that was raised provided a positive feedback so we wanted to bring it back this year.”

Mackrides said this year’s banquet has some major highlights: speakers Tambroni and a benefactor of the foundation, Eddie DiDonato.

DiDonato, a La Salle College grad and former Villanova captain, has made a remarkable recovery from multiple gunshot wounds suffered in January of 2010. He will speak about what the EVANFEST Foundation has meant to him.

“One thing we implemented was having a grant recipient speech,” said Mackrides. “Eddie will talk about how the Foundation helped him with the financial burden a few years back.

“A lot of people know Eddie and his story. The lax community has been behind him and we’re very fortunate to have him speak.”

Lastly, Mackrides mentioned how the Malvern Prep community and beyond has embraced the meaning of EVANFEST.

“It’s amazing to see how this event has grown,” said Mackrides. “It’s very closely tied to the Malvern Prep community, but you look at this event and we have Haverford School, La Salle, Penn Charter and so many guys we competed against showing support.

“Everybody out there is supporting the community and supporting EVANFEST. It’s all about the children that we’re trying to help. It’s pretty cool to see all the people from the Malvern Prep community and all those guys we competed against growing up and coming together to give a little money for a great cause.”
