Shannon Quinn scored the game-winner one minute into sudden-victory overtime today as Radnor rallied to defeat Archbishop Carroll, 12-11, in the first round of the PIAA girls’ lacrosse tournament at Neumann University.
The Red Raiders (18-4), the third seed from District 1, advance to the quarterfinals Saturday vs. Springfield-Delco, a 16-15 winner over Strath Haven. Archbishop Carroll, the District 12 champion, closes its season at 16-6.
Quinn, who had four goals and an assist, tied it with 50 seconds left and then wrapped around the goal to beat Sophia Cuzzupe (12 saves) for the game-winner.
“I was trying to get the ball back to Sara (Curley) on a back-and-forth thing,” Quinn said. “My girl began pressuring me and ended up behind me so I ran her around the crease. There was no one on that side so I crashed and shot it.”
Radnor had trailed much of the game, but never by more than three goals on this burning hot afternoon. The biggest deficit in the second half was 10-7, but the Red Raiders tied, ti 10-10, on a goal by Katie Quinn with 9:37 to play.
“Every single time out, every water break, we kept saying ‘We’re not losing in the first round of states,’” said Shannon Quinn. “In order to score the goals, we needed to stay calm and relaxed and we gained our composure back.”
Carroll went ahead, 11-10, on a goal by Natalie Schmitt (four goals) with 1:24 left. Isabelle Schmitt also scored four goals for the Patriots.
Sara Curley added two goals and two assists for Radnor and Sydney Cowles scored twice while Grace Collins had many big saves among her nine stops.
Cuzzupe was a standout for the Patriots.
“Sophia did a great job. They all did a great job, it’s a tough one to lose,” said Carroll coach Lorraine Beers. “We had a couple extra turnovers in the second half that killed us.
“We were rushing transition and throwing the ball away. And I was happy to see we didn’t do that in the first half.”
