For the second year in a row, the Philadelphia Wings ended their season in the first round of the playoffs at the hands of the Rochester Knighthawks, losing 10-8 at Blue Cross Arena on Saturday.

The Wings again struggled with a slow start, trailing 3-0 after the first quarter but started the second quarter with three unanswered goals on the way to a four goal quarter. Drew Westervelt’s two goals in the quarter got the Wings to within two at the half, as the Knighthawks led 6-4.

Forward Kevin Crowley got the third quarter off to a fast start with an early goal and a second to end the quarter and get the Wings to within one heading into the fourth. Brendan Mundorf scored to open the final quarter and notch things even at seven, where things stayed until Rochester broke the tie with nine minutes to play in the game. The Knighthawks then scored three unanswered goals in the final five minutes and never looked back.

Rochester was led by Dan Dawson with six points on four goals and two assists. Net minder Matt Vinc, who leads the league in goal against average and saves, registered 29 saves in the Rochester win.

Philadelphia finishes the season at 7-10 and a second consecutive trip to the playoffs, a feat the team had not accomplished in 11 years leading up to this season.
