Men’s recruits: Vermont adds Tordone (Owen J. Roberts) among Class of 2017

University of Vermont men’s lacrosse head coach Ryan Curtis announced the addition of 11 newcomers to the team for the upcoming 2014 season. Michael Clarke (Rumson, N.J.), Ben Cox (Medfield, Mass.), Jon Diamond (Gladstone, N.J.), Kyle Fragnoli (Latham, N.Y.), Jon Kaplan (Glastonbury, Conn.), Ian MacKay (Port Elgin, Ontario), Hunter Mayhew (Madison, Conn.), Mark Phillips (Montclair, N.J.), Alex Stanko (West Newton, Mass.), Nick Tordone (Spring City, Pa./Owen J. Robertsd) and Karl Weller (Stowe, Vt.) each enter their freshman season with the Catamounts this year. Curtis made the announcement this afternoon.

Tordone joins the program after a high school career at Owen J. Roberts. Tordone earned First Team PAC-10 honors in his final two seasons, and also helped lead his team to a Pac-10 Championship in 2009.

Clarke comes to Vermont from Rumson Fair Haven Regional HS, where he earned All-American honors and was named the 2013 Shore Player of the Year. Clark also earned first team all-county and all-state honors during his high school career.

Cox joins the program after spending four years at Medfield HS. He was named the Boston Globe DII Player of the Year and the Player of the year, while also earning BostonLax All-American honors as well.

Diamond comes to UVM from Bernards High School, where he was named first team all-state in 2013 and selected to the first team all-county and all-division squads from 2011-13.

Fragnoli joins the Catamounts after spending his high school career at Shaker High. Fragnoli was selected to the first team all-section team twice, and also earned Suburban Council All-Star honors two times.

Kaplan comes to Vermont from Glastonbury HS, where he was named second team all-state in 2013, and selected to the first team all-conference in each of his final two seasons.

MacKay comes to UVM from Port Elgin, Ontario where he spent his high school career at the Hill Academy. MacKay was a team captain and was named the squad’s MVP in high school.

Mayhew joins the Catamounts after a four-year career at Hand High School. In 2012, Mayhew was honored by earning selections to the All-State, All-SCC and All-Area Teams.

Phillips comes to Vermont from Montclair Kimberley Academy, where he was named First Team All-Prep B in both 2012 and 2013, and also earned all-county second team honors in the same two seasons.

Stanko spent his high school career at Dexter School before going to New Hampton Prep School. He was named First Team All-New England and First Team All-Lakes Region in 2013. Stanko also holds the Dexter School record for career goals, with 131.

Weller went to Hingham HS in Massachusetts before attending Avon Old Farms Prep School. He was named a Patriot League All-Star in 2010, and also helped lead his team to a Founders League Championship in 2012.

The Catamounts finished last season at 4-10 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Vermont returns goalkeeper Justin Rosenberg, who earned America East All-Rookie honors a season ago. Graham Horvath is UVM’s top returning scorer, after finishing second on the team in both points (34) and goals (31) in 2013.
