Men’s lacrosse: Delaware closes season with loss to UMass

The host UMass men’s lacrosse team broke open a close game by outscoring Delaware 8-2 in the second quarter as the Blue Hens closed out the 2013 men’s lacrosse season with a 16-8 Colonial Athletic Association setback at Garber Field.

Delaware senior Nick Diachenko and junior Danny Keane each scored two goals and Colin Fleming (St.Joseph’s Prep) had a goal and an assist to lead the Blue Hens, who finished the season with a record of 5-10 (1-5 CAA). Diachenko finished the season as the Hens’ leading scorer with a career-high 35 goals.

Eric Smith, Dom Sebastiani (Moorestown), Alex Martinelli (Moorestown), and Jeff Heath (St. Joseph’s Prep) also scored goals for the Blue Hens while Sean Finegan, Tom Holland, Brian Kormondy, and John O’Connor dished out assists, and goalkeeper Conor Peaks stopped a season-high 15 shots.

Massachusetts (7-7, 2-4 CAA) got huge games from the tandem of Kyle Smith and Will Manny. Smith scored six goals and dished out three assists while Manny contributed four goals and three assists. In addition, Grant Whiteway scored twice and dished out an assist while Bobby Tyler dished out two assists.

The Minutemen outshot Delaware 42-31, held a 37-28 advantage in groundballs, and won 16 of 27 faceoffs while forcing a season-high 23 turnovers for the Blue Hens.

Massachusetts took a 4-2 lead early in the second quarter on a goal by Smith, but Delaware came right back on a goal by Diachenko to narrow the gap to 4-3 with 12:01 left in the first half.

But the rest of the half belonged to the Minutemen as they followed with two goals in less than a minute, and after the Hens got a goal from Smith, reeled off the final five scores of the half to take an 11-4 lead into intermission.

Delaware came out strong in the second half, scoring the first two goals on tallies by Sebastiani and Keane, but UMass charged back once again, scoring the next four goals to go up 15-6 and put the game away.
