The Delaware Silverbacks advanced to the semifinals of the Elite Division (11th, 12th grade) today at the Dick’s Sporting Goods Tournament of Champions at Wesley Chapel, Fla.
Meanwhile, Mesa Fresh 2016 advanced to the semifinals of the Rising Stars (9th-10th-11 grade) Division.
Connor Swalm (Middletown) scored eight goals in two playoff games today for the Silverbacks, who opened with a 15-0 rout of the Tampa Tribe (FL) behind shutout goaltending by Alex Manges (St. Mark’s) and Dylan McCleaft (Penncrest) as well as standout defense (only four shots on goal allowed).
Both goalies also stood out in the quarterfinals as they led the Silverbacks to a 7-4 triumph over Northern Lacrosse from Ontario, Canada.
Delaware face-off men Jake Shriner (Caravel Academy) and TJ Logue (Salesianum School) were a perfect 16-of-16 vs. the Tribe and lost only three draws vs. Northern.
The Silverbacks will meet the Road Warriors (N.C.) in the semis at 8 a.m. Florida Elite will meet Sweetlax (N.Y.) in the other semifinal.
In the Rising Stars quarters, Mesa Fresh 2016 toppled Cannons Elite (MD), 12-4, behind its typical balanced scoring. Eight different people scored for Mesa Fresh 2016.
Mesa Fresh 2016 will face Six Nations Thunder Tribe (Ontario, Canada) in the semis Tuesday at 8 a.m. Checkmate Sharks (N.Y.) and Northern Lacrosse (Ontario) will meet in the other semifinal.
Mesa Fresh is trying to become the third straight Mesa team to win the Rising Stars tourney; last year the 2015 group took the title and the year before it was the 2014 squad.
In the U11 tourney, Philly-based Rising Sons 2020 was eliminated by the LI Express Terps 2020, 8-1.
