Phillylacrosse.com analyzes local players that are playing on Division I teams ranked in the Face-Off Yearbook Top 20.
Today we spotlight players on the teams in the Top 10.
1 – Loyola – Senior MF Chris Layne (Malvern Prep) was a key defensive standout as a starter last year after transferring from North Carolina and could be a bigger offensive producer this year. Sophomore ATT Nikko Pontrello (St,. Augustine Prep) could crack the top line and sophomore DEF Alex Klincewicz (Lower Merion) may push for regular time. Freshmen vying for time are DEF Justin Verratti (Salesianum School), FO Kyle Gangemi (Salesianum School) and MF Joe Baker (Hershey, HEADstrong). Former Malvern Prep coach David Metzbower is the Offensive Coordinator.
2 – Maryland – The Terps are filled with Philly grads, led by senior ATT Owen Blye (Downingtown East, 20G, 20A), junior goalie Niko Amato (La Salle, 156 saves, HM AA) and sophomore DEF Goran Murray (Haverford School, ACC Rookie of Year and HM AA). Sophomore DEF Casey Ikeda (Conestoga) looks for playing time and sophomore ATT Kevin Forster (La Salle) looks to rebound from an injury. Freshmen vying for time include FO Jon Garino (Episcopal Academy), ATT Bradlee Lord (Conestoga), ATT Tyler Brooke (Conestoga) and DEF Ryan Lehman (Garnet Valley).
3 – Notre Dame – Junior ATT Westy Hopkins (La Salle/Lawrenceville School, 18 G) and junior DEF Stephen O’Hara (St. Joseph’s Prep, 39 GB) are starters. Senior DEF Tyler Andersen (Radnor) and junior FO Liam O’Connor (Haverford School) are regulars while freshman DEF Jack Sheridan (Malvern Prep), freshman redshirt G Conor Kelly (Haverford School) and freshman MF Adam Goins(Conestoga) look to contribute.
4 – Duke – Senior G Dan Wigrizer (Haverford School, 129 Saves) is a three-year starter and junior ATT Jordan Wolf (Lower Merion, 32 G, 33 A) is a First Team AA candidate. Junior DEF Henry Lobb (Malvern Prep, 15 CT) earned a starting spot last year and senior DEF Billy Conners (Malvern Prep) is a key reserve who could get back into the starting lineup. Sophomore LSM Brian Dailey (Conestoga, 20 GB) and sophomore MF Tanner Scott (Conestoga) will contribute and freshman DEF Jamie Ikeda (Conestoga) looks for time.
5 – North Carolina – The Tar Heels feature junior MF Ryan Creighton (Malvern Prep, 7G, 6A) and sophomore ATT Joey Sankey (Penn Charter, 22G, 22A) as probable starters. Sophomore goalie Andrew O’Connell (Malvern Prep) is vying for a starting spot and sophomore DEF Ryan Kilpatrick (Salesianum School, 21GB) is looking for a starting spot while sophomore DEF Dane Dickey (Moorestown) looks for time. Freshmen looking for time include goalie Duncan Saunders (Hill School) and MF Steve Pontrello (St. Augustine Prep).
6 – Johns Hopkins – The Blue Jays feature one of the nation’s top defensemen in senior AA Tucker Durkin (La Salle). Sophomore FO Drew Kennedy (Malvern Prep) will play a key role and freshman DEF Eddie Morris (Malvern Prep) looks for time.
7 – Cornell – Senior DEF Mike Bronzino (Conestoga) is a defensive backbone and freshman goalie Brennan Donville (Hill School) is looking to contribute.
8 – Lehigh – The Mountain Hawks have harvested a number of Philly products, led by senior DEF Mike Noone (La Salle), junior DEF Ty Souders (Emmaus) and SR FO Ryan Snyder (Reading native, Dukes LC). Others that will play regular roles are senior MF Derek Bogorowski (La Salle) and junior FO Ryan Buttenbaum (Conestoga) while sophomore MF Kurtis Kaunas (Parkland) and junior MF Matt Smith (Conestoga) look to contribute along with senior G Dan Carr (Penn Charter), sophomore MF Jack Bogorowski (La Salle), junior MF Harrison Lawrence (Radnor), and junior DEF Bryson Craft (Episcopal Academy). Freshman looking for time include DEF Casey Eidenshink (La Salle), ATT Ben Junior (Radnor), ATT Reid Weber (Germantown Academy), G Steve Brodeur (Strath Haven) and MF Andrew Iacocco (Allentown native, Blair School).
9 – Virginia – The Cavs will look to senior AA MF Chris LaPierre (Shawnee, 63 GB) and junior MF Bobby Hill (Malvern Prep) while sophomore ATT Carl Walrath (Haverford School) looks for regular time. Freshman MF Will McNamara (Haverford School) and senior DEF Dan Lantz (Wilmington Charter) are vying for time.
10 – Denver – Senior MF Sean Snodgrass (Hill School) is a reserve.
