Matt Rambo (La Salle) scored his fourth goal with just under one minute to play as Team Philly edged Upstate New York, 9-8, today in the first round of the Under Armour Underclassmen tournament at Towson University.
Paul Major (Spring-Ford) added two goals, including the game-tying tally with about 2:30 to play. Kevin Leyden (Haverford High), Brandyn O’Connell (Downingtown East) and Peter Blynn (Haverford School) each added one goal for Team Philly. Matt Barrett (Malvern Prep) had four saves and Robbie Zonono (Conestoga) had six saves to earn the win.
Philly also got strong work at the face-off X by Zach Penfil (Garnet Valley) and Mark Gurenlian (Springfield-Delco) and standout play by the defense, according to coach Brian Samson (Conestoga).
Team Philly next plays Saturday at noon vs. New England and then at 4 p.m. vs the South. Ir closes pool play Sunday against Long Island at 8 a.m.
Meanwhile, the Philly girls’ team dropped a 16-8 decision to Washington D.C. in its opener. Philly is playing the Midwest in a second pool play game this afternoon.
