Garnet Valley opened defense of its 2011 PIAA championship Saturday by handing 11-time Catholic league champion Archbishop Carroll a 16-8 defeat.
The Jaguars, No. 2 in this week’s rankings, will get plenty of chances to play nationally-ranked teams. The first shot is April 2 at Our Lady of Good Counsel (Md.)
Meanwhile, No. 1 Moorestown opens Saturday by hosting Strath Haven. The Quakers won last year’s New Jersey Group III state title and reached the finals of the Tournament of Champions.
This week’s rankings:
1, Moorestown (0-0) – The Quakers are favored to go back to the New Jersey state finals. Prev: No. 1
2, Garnet Valley (1-0) –The Jags looked like a defending state champion that returns 11 starters in their win over Carroll. Prev: No. 2
3, Great Valley (1-0) – The Patriots play at PAC-10 poer Boyertown on Tuesday. Prev: No. 3
4, Springfield-Delco (1-0) – The Cougars open Central League play Tuesday at Haverford High and then host Harriton on Thursday. Prev: No. 4.
5, Shawnee (0-0) – The Renegades open April 3 at Eastern. Prev: No. 5
6, Archbishop Carroll (0-1) – The Patriots struggled vs. Garnet Valley, but so will many teams. Prev: No. 6
7, Radnor (1-0) – The Red Raiders topped Downingtown East, 17-10, and open Central League play Tuesday at Marple Newtown. Prev: No. 7
8, Conestoga (0-0) – The Pioneers open Tuesday with a Central League game at Penncrest. Prev: No. 8
9, Notre Dame (1-0) – The Fighting Irish opened with a 19-8 win over Hill School. Prev: NR
10, Washington Township (0-0) – The Minutemaids open today vs. Bishop Eustace. Prev: No. 10
