MLK Tournament roundup: Three more Philly teams fared well

All Philly teams fared well this weekend at the Tri-State National Indoor Championships (MLK Tournament) at Peddie School, N.J.

The Duke’s Lacrosse Club claimed the championship. Meanwhile, the defending champion Hermits (St. Augustine Prep) reached the quarterfinals before bowing the Dukes, 8-6.

For the Hermits, the attack was led by seniors Tommy O’Neill (Penn State), Pat McMenamin (Wagner), Bill McMenamin (Wagner) and junior Mike Sutton (Penn State) while senior Bryan Phillips (Drexel), junior Nate Gorman (Villanova), sophomore Dan Sacchetti led the defense and senior Joe Gigiantiello (Denver) was strong in goal.

Quaker, comprised of players mostly from Penn Charter, went 4-2 overall and fell to the Hermits, 7-6, in the quarterfinals.

Quaker was led by senior attackman Reid Weber (Germantown Academy, Lehigh), senior goalie Jackson Tamasitis (Army, was “awesome” according to coach Jim Still), senior defenseman John Moderski, senior defenseman Tommy Monzo, junior attackman Ray Vandegrift and senior attackman Shane Carr (Yale).

Rebel Elite, which featured only one senior. fell to Lawrenceville, 13-6, in the quarterfinals. Rebels coach Harry Sankey said his young team was extremely competitive. Senior attackman Zach Fink (Harriton, Franklin & Marshall) was a standout for the Rebels.

Meanwhile, Philly players helped Tri-State Green reach the semis before bowing to Sweet Lax, 8-6. Some standouts included junior attackman Anthony Marini (St. Joseph’s Prep, Notre Dame), senior goalie Duncan Saunders (Hill School, North Carolina) and senior attackman Tim Mulrenan (Seton Hall Prep, Villanova).
