The Drexel men’s lacrosse team opens the 2012 season at home today against the University of Virginia, the defending national champion, at 2:00 p.m. at Vidas Field. Tickets are still available and will be available both in advance and at the gate.
The Dragons finished 8-6 a year ago and 3-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Drexel returns its entire defense including Preseason All-American Frank Tufano. Dana Wilber, Brian Teuber (Penn Charter) and Matt Dusek join Tufano as returners. The Dragons also return two-time All-American Mark Manos (Salesianum School) in the cage.
On attack, Robert Church is the team’s leading returning scorer. The junior scored 27 goals and had 49 points a year ago. Kyle Bergman, Brendan Glynn (St. Joseph’s Prep) and Nick Trizano all had at least 24 points a year ago and will be counted on for even more production this season.
The Cavaliers won their fifth national championship in May with a 9-7 win against Maryland at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Colin Briggs scored five goals to lead Virginia and was named the Most Outstanding Player. Virginia returns seven starters, including three All-Americans in Steele Stanwick, Briggs, Chris LaPierre and Chris Bocklet.
