From Press Release
After a slow start the host Cabrini college men’s lacrosse team found its scoring touch today, defeating the visiting Centenary College Cyclones, 19-5, at Edith Robb Dixon Field.
The victory extends Cabrini’s win streak against Colonial States Athletic Conference in regular and postseason play to 107 games.
The Cavaliers displayed a balanced offensive effort with seven players scoring at least two goals. Sophomore Matt Biegel (West Chester East) led the way with career highs with seven points and four assists. Freshman Anthony DiSanzo joined Biegel with three goals on the day.
The No. 9 Cavaliers (9-2, 3-0 CSAC) struggled to find its scoring touch in the first quarter. The Blue and White peppered the Cyclones’ defense to the tune of 15 first period shots, but only found the net once. Biegel tallied Cabrini’s first goal with 4:41 to play in the first period.
The Cyclones evened the score with just south of two minutes to play in the quarter. Cabrini’s offense woke up after the short intermission. The Cavaliers outscored Centenary 10-1 in the second period to put the game out of reach.
Freshman Damian Sobieski (Avon Grove) found fellow rookie Kevin McQuilliam less than one minute into the second period. Freshman Mike Leyden (Haverford High) tallied the first of his two with 6:12 to play before halftime.
The Cyclones got one back less than 30 seconds later, before an impressive Cavaliers’ spurt.
In a 67 second period, the Blue and White increased its lead from 3-2 to 7-2. A pair of goals by junior Bobby Thorp, Disanzo’s first, and a Corey Elmer tally seemed to take the wind from the Cyclones.
Cabrini added four more goals in the final 3:21 of the half, sending the teams to halftime with the Blue and White leading 11-2.
Leyden opened the second half with his second tally of the day just over two minutes into play.
Freshman Anthony Greco (Abington) found Elmer with 2:42 left in the third quarter for the Cavaliers’ 13th score of the day. Sobieski closed the period with his second goal of the day.
DiSanzo completed his hat trick 45 seconds into the final stanza, extending Cabrini’s lead to 15-3. Biegel closed his career day at the 6:47 mark with his third tally of the game.
Sophomore James Lindsay posted his second of the year 90 seconds before fellow sophomore Dave Martina posted his first career goal with 4:24 to play.
MacQuilliam closed the Cavaliers’ scoring with his second goal with 3:28 on the clock.
This was certainly a balanced team effort as the Blue and White recorded 18 assists on its 19 goals. Aside from Biegel’s four helpers, Thorp, senior Joe Arrell (Springfield-Delco) and junior Andrew Layne (Malvern Prep) each added a pair of assists.
Rookie Anthony DiNenno (Avon Grove) sparked the offense, taking 15 of his 18 faceoff chances. Cabrini secured 49 ground balls to Centenary’s 18, led by DiNenno and sophomore JoJo Cooper who combined for 10.
Defensively, junior Tyler Grau caused four turnovers and goaltender Erick Zarzecki recorded nine saves.
