Lauren Mengel log:

Lauren Mengel, flanked by her mother Donna and father George, signs a National Letter of Intent to play Division II soccer and lacrosse at the University of Bridgeport (Conn.) Monday at the high school. Standing is Boyertown lacrosse coach Pam Wernersbach.

High School: Boyertown

Graduation Year: 2013

Sport (Position): Lacrosse (midfield, defense); Soccer (outside back)

College Choice: University of Bridgeport (Conn.)

Club Affiliation: FC Delco (soccer); West-Mont (soccer)

Major Athletic Honors: 2010-honorable mention All-PAC-10 girls soccer-defense; 2011-second team All PAC-10 girls soccer-defense

Academic/community service: Honor roll student, 3.6 GPA; Active in Toys for Tots drives and other community-based fundraisers around the holiday season

College Major: Dental hygiene

Why did you choose Bridgeport?
“I liked the atmosphere at the school and the girls on the team were really nice. This is a good mix for me, allows me to play both sports that I really love. Bridgeport was one of only five schools with my major that has a soccer program. The lacrosse program at Bridgeport is only in its fourth year, so this is the third recruiting class. In soccer, they need an outside back so I see the opportunity to play right away if I work hard enough.”

Additional comments: “We won state championships and went to nationals in soccer with West-Mont and FC Delco, and I played against some very good competition. That makes you better. I’ve always been faster than most girls, and I’ve learned a lot over the years. We’ve always had a lot of success in lacrosse at Boyertown, and it gives me a good break from soccer. I really love both sports.”

Boyertown lacrosse coach Pam Wernersbach:
“Lauren has been a three-year starter, and she really blossomed during her sophomore season in the playoffs. She is extremely fast and extremely athletic, and her athleticism allows her to do some things that other kids can’t. I think she’ll play midfield/defense in college. She’s willing to outwork the other kids, always wants to do the extra things. She’s a rare dual-sport athlete at the Division II level, and I think her time management will allow her to reach her goals. She won’t have any time to miss around.” and are content sharing partners
