Brendan Newman had two goals and an assist and scored early in the fourth quarter Saturday to give Lawrenceville School a 5-4 victory over Malvern Prep at the 12th annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival at Radnor High.

The win was sweet for the Big Red (10-3), which coming off consecutive losses to Connecticut prep powers Hotchkiss (7-5) and Brunswick School (9-8).
“We hadn’t been playing our best lacrosse,” said Lawrenceville coach Allen Fitzpatrick. “But the kids really dug deep, and I couldn’t be prouder of a team.”
The big story of the game was Lawrenceville goalie Matt O’Connor. The Princeton-bound senior made 10 saves, including a number of spectacular stops down the stretch.
“He’s been the man all season,” said Fitzpatrick of O’Connor. “He’s been a 4-year starter for us. It’s nice to have him back there; we’re sure going to miss him next year.”
Jake Glancy had two goals to lead the Friars (6-7), who had a three-game winning streak snapped.
Lawrenceville travels to Deerfield Academy on Wednesday. Malvern Prep next plays at Episcopal on Tuesday.
