Host Great valley raced to an 8-0 lead and routed Downingtown East, 15-6, today in its Ches-Mont League girls’ lacrosse opener.
The Patriots, ranked No. 2 in the state in the PA Media Rankings, improved to 5-0. The Cougars fell to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Ches-Mont.
Patriot attackers Brittany Edwards and Brooke Gamble each tallied three goals in the first half, while midfielder Ali Kowalski added three goals in the second half. Jenna Morris made seven saves.
“It was all about possessions today; whoever had the ball was going to score.” Kowalski said. “I didn’t try to force any shots, I was just constantly moving both with and without the ball.”
McKenzie Rafferty scored twice for the Cougars.
Great Valley coach Joe Tornetta was pleased with his team’s start to the game.
“In the first half, we were able to take care of the ball and get good scoring opportunities,” he said.
Although this was a big win for his team, Tornetta believes there is room for improvement.
“At this point in the season, there is still a lot to do,” he said. “We need to work on making better decisions with the ball and making our possessions count.”
Great Valley is looking next to a showdown with Downingtown West on Thursday.
Downingtown East coach Christy Somits pinpointed the loss the slow start.
“We came out flat,” she said. “ They jumped up on us with fuve goals immediately to start the game, and with a team like that it’s hard to come back. The slow start and our fundamentals was what killed us today.”
Next up for Downingtown East is a home game Thursday with Bishop Shanahan.
