The Lafayette men’s lacrosse team opened its season Saturday at home by defeating Providence, 10-5, behind a number of strong efforts by Philly grads.
Senior Will Heffernan (Haverford School) led the Leopards with four goals and an assist and freshman Cory Scheuerle (St. Joseph’s Prep) added a goal while freshman Brian Bock (Spring-Ford) dished off four assists.
Providence ended the first half scoring with eight seconds left, as the Leopards walked into intermission holding a 5-3 lead.
Much like the first half, Lafayette came out from the half’s opening face-off and delivered two goals to open up the game. An unassisted tally from Greg Allis and man-up goal from Heffernan (Bock assist) once again push the lead back to four (7-3) with 5:09 remaining in the third quarter.
Providence answered with their own man-up goal before the Leopards sealed the game with a 3-0 run to end the third and open the fourth quarter.;
An unassisted goal from Serling and two consecutive goals from Heffernan (both Bock assists) capped off the Lafayette scoring and sealed a 10-5 season-opening win.

Lafayette scored the first eight goals of the afternoon and never looked back on its way to a season-opening 15-3 victory over Liberty on Saturday afternoon at Rappolt Field.
Junior Addie Godfrey paced the Leopards with five goals, Ana White (Strath Haven) had two goals, two assists, three groundballs and seven draw controls and freshman goalkeeper Mimi Connell (Paoli native/Berkshire School) made four saves in her first collegiate start.
“We were incredibly impressed with the effort and the energy that all the kids brought today,” head coach Alison Fisher (Hatboro-Horsham grad) said. “We are excited to get off to such a strong start with so many people making positive contributions.”
Back-to-back goals from Godfrey and White, just 20 seconds apart, stretched the Leopard lead to 4-0, followed by junior Jessica Rothstein (Harriton) finding the back of the net on an unassisted goal at 24:42 to make it 5-0 just over five minutes into the game.
Lafayette continued to control the game, using a pair of man-down goals from Godfrey and junior Victoria Maxon (Rothstein assist) to increase the Lafayette advantage to 7-0 with 13:44 remaining.
Godfrey’s fourth goal of the half came at even-strength with 11:41 left before halftime as the Leopards cruised into intermission with an 8-1 lead.
