Shawnee (N.J.) sophomore midfielder Kyle Borbi has made a verbal commitment to play Division I lacrosse at the University of Notre Dame.
Borbi is the first South Jersey sophomore to commit to a Division I school. A member of Tri-State, he was a Second-Team All-State Soph/Frosh pick last year when he collected 42 goals and 28 assists for a Renegades team that went 17-5.

Lacrosse honors: No. 19 Young Gun by Inside Lacrosse; captain of his Tri-State team; attended Jake Reed’s Blue Chip; collected 42 goals, 28 assists in 2011; Second Team All-Stats freshman/sophomore team; running back and return specialist in football; also club champion in tennis.
Other schools considered: Duke, Harvard, Ohio State, Princeton, Dartmouth.
Playing football and tennis: “In football I’m a running back and slot receiver. I get moved around a lot in different positions which is exciting because I get to do a little of everything. I returned punts and kickoffs, too, this year for the team.
“Shawnee Football is always extremely competitive everyday at practice, and the coaches are some of the most fun guys I’ve ever been around.
“I use to be extremely competitive in tennis a few years ago. I would have even considered it my favorite sport at the time. I won the club championship a few times which is a great honor to me. Since lacrosse has been basically my main focus along with football it’s tough to try and get out and hit the ball around. So I just do it for fun every now and then when I’ve got the time.”
Academic honors: 4.0 GPA Freshman year. Started a foundation for kids who suffer from the Birth Defect Microtia because I too have Microtia.
Tell us about your Foundation: “We help raise money for kids who suffer with Microtia. It’s always an expensive procedure to receive different surgeries. I had three separate surgeries in California when I was younger. It’s hard on younger kids who suffer from it, so my family and I like to try and help them out.”
What will you major/in study: “I plan to follow in the footsteps of my father and become a lawyer.”
Why did you choose Notre Dame? “The tradition Notre Dame carries has been a huge part in my family’s history. It’s an honor to be the first person going there in my family. Also, the coaches are really intense which I love, and the facilities and weight room are really impressive.”
What is you HS season outlook? “The team tends to compete in every game we’re in like we do every year. We have many starters returning which is exciting, so we can keep building chemistry. Two of our starters, Robby Diorio and Kyle Wigley, suffered injuries. They might not be returnable for the season, but I’m confident that this year we have guys ready to step up. The team’s main goal is to win a State Championship for the first time at Shawnee.”
Additional comments: “I would not be the lacrosse player I am today without my Tri-State team Coach (Bob) Turco. He has been a great mentor for me and focuses on more than just the sport which has made me into a leader. Also, I thank my father who runs me around nonstop for different games and training.”
