TOWSON, Md. – After a rusty first half host Loyola Blakefield (MD) used a 4-goal run to start the third quarter and downed Penn Charter, 9-8, as the high school boys’ lacrosse season opened Friday.

The Dons were stymied early by Penn Charter senior goalie Jackson Tamasitis, who has committed to Army. Tamasitis had five saves at halftime, keeping the game tied, 3-3.

Loyola Blakefield, ranked No. 13 in the Under Armour/Inside Lacrosse Power Rankings and No. 15 by ESPNHS, took control in the third period.

Early in the second half, junior Devin McNamara gave Loyola the 4-3 lead. Then senior Austin Stewart delivered a pair to give the Don’s a 6-3 lead.

The Quakers were flagged twice for an illegal body check, which gave the Dons the two-man advantage. Middie TJ Neubauer found McNamara for the extra man goal to give Loyola Blakefield a 7-3 lead.

“If you are going to leave the game up to a referee’s decision you know then that’s our fault,” said Penn Charter head coach Pat McDonough. “We’ve got to get smarter and we’ve got to get better.

“For our first outing it was a heck of an effort, but not a very smartly played game.”

The Dons were flagged for a pair of illegal body check penalties, and the Quakers drew within 7-5 on scores from Shane Carr (two goals) and Drew Murray. Penn Charter later drew within 8-7 with less than 7 minutes in the fourth quarter, but Conor Dalton scored his third goal of the game with 2:43 left to give Loyola Blakefield a 9-7 lead.

Quakers middie Tyler Earley scored to get Penn Charter back within one, and then had a final possession. But Loyola goalie Chris Thomas and the defense played tight, not allowing an easy shot for Penn Charter.

The Dons and Quakers have played several close games to open the season in recent years. Penn Charter won last year by the same 9-8 score and also edged Loyola, 6-5, in 2009. The Dons won the 2010 game, 9-7.

“They’re kind of like our rivals in Pennsylvania,” said Dalton. “So we just wanted to finish the job (today) and get off to a good start.”

Loyola Blakefield will face Memphis University School (TN) Tuesday and Penn Charter looks to regroup quickly as it hosts another MIAA power in Boys’ Latin, also on Tuesday.
