Eddie McLoughlin and Mick Horrocks each scored twice and goalie Matt Barrett notched 13 saves as host Malvern Prep raced to a large early lead and toppled Salesianum School, 10-4, today in non-league boys’ lacrosse.
The Friars took a 6-1 halftime lead and stretched the advantage to 9-1 in the third period. The win was critical to a team that has won two in a row to improve to 5-6 against a national schedule.
Salesianum School, the defending Delaware state champion, fell to 6-2.
Barrett, the junior goalie headed to Virginia, was a standout all day, helping keep momentum for the Friars.
“It was all on my defense today,” Barrett said. “They really kept the ball far away from the net so I could see every shot coming.”
Salesianum’s coach Bob Healy also praised the junior goalie.
“Matt Barrett played very well today,” Healy said. “He closed every opportunity we had to keep us out of the game. He’s a great player. After today, we have a lot to work on.”
Malvern Prep senior midfielder Russell Atkinson (one goal) was happy with his team’s play. “We really played as a team throughout the game and connected on all our shots.” said Atkinson, committed to play next year at Navy. A
Coach Dave Metzbower liked his team’s ball control, but is already looking forward to Malvern’s Inter-Ac League game with visiting Penn Charter on Thursday.
“We were moving the ball around a lot on offense, and when we jumped out to a four-goal lead it really helped us,” said Metzbower. “We know we have to play well against Penn Charter. It went into overtime last time, so we know that it will be a battle.”
Jason Kelly had two goals for the Sals and Sean Giampietro added one goal and one assist. Matt Barone made 10 saves.
