Jimmy Murphy had two goals and scooped nine groundballs and Jimmy Durkin scored two goals while Dom DeFazio led a suffocating defense as host Hatboro-Horsham toppled Central Bucks East, 6-2, Monday in a key Suburban One Continental Conference boys’ lacrosse game.

The Hatters improved to 8-2 overall and 6-1 in the league while avenging a 9-7 loss to East earlier in the year. The Pats fell to 9-1 overall and 7-1 in the league.

DeFazio also had nine groundballs and teamed with Tyler Gehlhaus, Jake Cresta, Ryan Higgins, Ryan New, and Sean Black to lead a brilliant defense that held the Pats scoreless for three and a half quarters as the Hatters seized a 6-0 lead. Mark Poust had 11 saves to pick up another win in goal and Steve Palo was a standout at the face-off X.

“It all starts with our senior leaders on defense,” said Hatboro-Horsham coach John Kurek. “You take a guy like Dom DeFazio, he teaches these guys as much as the coaches do. My hat’s off to Dom and to Tyler Gelhaus, our other senior captain back there. These young guys just feed off their example.

“With our guys, it’s almost like they learn from past experiences. The kids were hungry, they said, we’ve got to learn from the film, we’ve got to learn from the experience last time and fix it. We saw our matchups and the kids just played. It was amazing.”

Trevor Downing and Connor Kreston also added one goal apiece for HH.

“It was all mental, we needed to make sure we keep our heads in it, not let it get to our heads if we get the lead,” said DeFazio, who recently decided to play next year at powerful Hill Academy in Ontario, Canada. “We just wanted to play solid D, straight up, fundamental defense, and we just tried to do the best we could.

“This was huge for us. Undefeated or not, East is our rival. It’s always a great game to play.”

Harrison Holak had 11 saves for East, which got late goals from Parker Self and Cole Rushworth.

“(Hatboro-Horsham) played a very good game, they did very well,” said Central Bucks East coach Bruce Garcia. “We just couldn’t get our game started. They came with their ‘A’ Game and they played very well. They deserved to win, they’re well-coached and they looked good.”
