The Ursinus College women’s lacrosse team opened the 2011 season on a strong note today, taking a 17-8 decision over Eastern, in the opener for both squads.
The Bears surged ahead quickly, as they scored seven of the game’s first eight goals in the win.
Junior midfielder Alyssa Thren (Upper Perkiomen) scored four goals during that run, finishing the afternoon with six goals on seven shots. Senior attack Lindsey Urban (Central Bucks East) had four goals in the win, while junior attack Kim Peifer (Methacton) added in two.
Senior midfielder Allison Furman (Boyertown) had five assists, as the Bears had an 11-4 halftime lead and led by as much as 11 goals.
Defensively, sophomore midfielder Elizabeth Chatburn (Upper Dublin) had six caused turnovers, with senior defender Kim Johnson and sophomore Claire Yergeau netting two each. Chatburn also scooped up five groundballs, with Urban, Furman and Johnson each grabbing three.
In goal, senior goalkeeper Emma Bacharach got the win as she made two saves in the first half, while sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Kimmel (Hatboro-Horsham) had four saves in the second half.
Kelly Dando led Eastern with two goals and Lindsey Moosey added a goal, an assist and six groundballs.

Northwestern 18, Navy 8
Aimee Gennaro (Archbishop Carroll) scored two goals and Kathy Young (Villa Maria Academy) had a goal and two caused turnovers for the Mids (5-1), who suffered their first loss of the year to the No. 2 Wildcats (4-0).
