The Philadelphia Wings had their three-game win streak snapped tonight in an 11-6 National Lacrosse League defeat at Rochester.
Forwards Athan Iannucci, Drew Westervelt, Ryan Boyle and Alex Turner led the attack for the Wings. Iannucci had two goals and three assists while Westervelt added two goals and two assists. Boyle had a goal and Turner scored once.
NLL Player of the Week Brandon Miller had 31 saves in 41 minutes. He allowed eight goals before being relieved by rookie goaltender Ray Hodgkinson.
Rochester scorers included transition player Jordon Hall (three goals). Craig Point (two), Mike Accursi (two), Cody Jamieson (one), Chris Driscoll (one), Shawn Williams (one) and Shawn Evans (one).
Before the game the Knighthawks announced that legendary Gary Gait – also a former Wing – was ending his playing career to focus on coaching. One of the greatest players in the history of professional lacrosse, the 43-year-old Gait retires after playing 18 seasons in the NLL and three with Rochester.
gait is entering his fourth year as coach of the Syracuse Women. He also was recently named an assistant coach of the new Hamilton Nationals of Major League Lacrosse.
The Wings return home to the Wells Fargo Center next Saturday, February 12 to host the Buffalo Bandits at 7 p.m. The game will be followed by a pink jersey auction in the AT&T Pavilion to benefit the Four Diamonds Fund.
