After going 2-0 in goal for the Explorers on the week and compiling a .563 save percentage, lacrosse junior goalkeeper Megan Corliss (Archbishop Carroll) has been named the Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference office today.

Corliss allowed six goals and made seven saves to help the Explorers post a 17-6 win over Iona at McCarthy Stadium last Wednesday.

On Saturday, the Bluebell, Pa. native made 11 stops, while allowing eight goals as La Salle defeated Lafayette, 9-8, in Easton, Pa.

Corliss ended the week with a GAA of 7.28.

The Explorers will look to extend their win streak to three games when they face Villanova at home on Friday evening. The game will begin at 7:00 p.m.

CHC’s Melnychenko is ECC Rookie of the Week

Freshman attack Mike Melnychenko (St. Catherines, Ontario) was recognized by the East Coast Conference (ECC) as the league’s Rookie of the Week after leading Chestnut Hill College with a seven-point debut week. Melnychenko recorded two goals and two assists in the season opener against Lees-McRae College, before recording three tallies in the Griffins ECC affair with the defending national champions, C.W. Post.

Lees McRae College (0-2) made a third quarter run at Chestnut Hill College (1-1, 0-1) in their neutral-site game on February 19. The Bobcats narrowed an 8-2 Griffin advantage to an 8-5 deficit with three consecutive scores.

Fortunately, a Melnychenko tally stopped the bleeding with two seconds left in the period, 9-5, and Griffins went on to a 12-5 victory with three unanswered, fourth-quarter goals. Melnychenko recorded two goals and two assists in addition to collecting, a team-high, seven ground balls. A week later, the Griffins opened their ECC schedule with a trip to C.W. Post (4-0, 1-0).

Melnychenko recorded a goal in each of the first, two quarters and added a third in the fourth quarter to lead the Griffins in the 13-7 loss. He also collected three ground balls.
