Stephanie Toy scored with 2:07 left in the fourth overtime Thursday night to lift Moorestown to a 14-13 victory over defending champion Mendham in the New Jersey Group 3 girls’ finals at Robbinsville High.
The Quakers (21-3) will advance to the Tournament of Champions Tuesday against a team to be determined from among the other state group champs.
Moorestown had won 10 straight state titles until falling last year to Shawnee in the Group semifinals – a defeat that snapped a remarkable 228-game win streak against New Jersey teams. The Quakers have now won 18 state titles.
Toy, who is signed with Notre Dame, took a pass from Nikki McMonagle behind the cage before pumping in the game-winner for her fifth goal of the game. She has 68 this year.
Moorestown had bolted to a 7-0 lead, but later had to rally from two one-goal deficits late in regulation to force overtime. The teams played two three-minute overtime periods, and another sudden death frame.
Toy ended matters with her fifth goal of the game and 68th of the season.
McMonagle finished with two goals and two assists and Nikki Shapiro and Haleigh Dalmass each added two goals. Carly Taglienti, Marie McCool, and Sydney Dalmass scored once each. Goalie Bridget Bianco, headed to NCAA champion Northwestern, made 12 saves.
Dalmass sent the game into OT by scoring with 50 seconds left in regulation.
