Manheim Township scored six unanswered goals in the second and third periods and degfeated Downingtown West, 9-7, Wednesday in the first round of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association boys’ lacrosse tournament at Cumberland Valley High in Mechanicsburg.
The District 3 champion Blue Streaks – ranked No. 2 in the PA Media Rankings in the PIAA – advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals where they will play District 12 champion St. Joseph’s Prep at a site and time to be determined.
The Whippets, who finished third in District 1, closed out at 20-3.
Downingtown West had seized a 4-0 second-period lead but Manheim drew within 4-3 before halftime on tallies by Alex Bradbury (two goals) and then brothers Chase and Quint Miller.
Quint Miller added two goals and Chase Miller had one in the third period when the Blue Streaks took a 6-4 lead.
Downingtown West tied the game early in the fourth period on goals by Eric Rankel (four goals, 8 of 10 face-offs) and Zach Logan. But Jake Weber found Rob Wertz to give Township a one-goal lead before Weber made it 8-6 with 8:24 left in the game.
Quint Miller later scored his third goal on a quick-stick shot off feed from behind the cage by Tyler Karpinski to ice it.
Chad Neiss (3 saves) and Alex Ready (6 saves) combined for the win.
Tyler McWilliams and Brad Shenberger each scored once for Downingtown West.

Hempfield 19, Delaware Valley 3
Michael Ondrusek erupted for six goals and three assists, Ryan Bailey had five goals and C.J. Bosch added four goals and three assists to lead the Black Knights (21-3) over the District 2 champions at Emmaus.
The win advanced Hempfield to Saturday’s quarterfinal round against defending state champ Conestoga, a 15-3 winner over Cumberland Valley.
Hempfield led, 7-1, after one period and 16-3 at halftime.
