University of North Carolina men’s lacrosse coach Joe Breschi Tuesday announced a 12-man recruiting class for the group that will enroll at Carolina in August 2011.
The class includes defenseman Ryan Kilpatrick (Salesianum School, DE) of West Chester, Pa., attackman Joey Sankey (Penn Charter) of Warminster, Pa., defenseman Jake Bailey of Fairport, N.Y., attackman Jimmy Bitter of Stowe, Vt., midfielder Walker Chafee of Little Compton, R.I., midfielder Joe Costigan of New Canaan, Conn., defenseman Dane Dickey of Moorestown, N.J., midfielder Drew Hays of Fairport, N.Y., midfielder Derek Henson of Mason, Ohio, defenseman Matt Shannon of Ridgefield, Conn., defenseman Brian Sullivan of Buffalo, N.Y., and attackman Chad Tutton of Vaughn, Ontario.
Kilpatrick, Sankey, Bitter, Chafee and Sullivan were named to the Under Armour All-America Teams for 2011. They will play in the Under Armour All-America Lacrosse Classic on Saturday, July 2 at Towson University’s Johnny Unitas Stadium.
Ryan Kilpatrick was coached by Bob Healy at salesianum. At 6-0 and 205 pounds, he is the son of Jerry and Meg Kilpatrick and was also an excellent football player in high school. A multi-accomplished player on the field, he was a 2010 and 2011 All-America and was named All-State three straight year from 2009-11. He was the Delaware player of the year and team MVP as a senior when he scooped up 104 ground balls and scored four goals and had 13 assists.
Kilpatrick led his squad to an undefeated season that ended in a state championship in 2009, another state crown in 2011 and state finalist spots in 2008 and 2010. He was honored as an ESPN Warrior Top 40 selection and was a member of the Philadelphia Under Armour Underclassmen Team. On the gridiron, he was the Gatorade state player of the year, team MVP and All-State as a senior. An honors student, he rushed for 1,721 yards and scored 25 touchdowns his senior year. He also was named All-Phillylacrosse.com in 2010.
Joseph S. Sankey is the son of Harry and Sophie Sankey. A 5-6, 155-pound attackman, he plays for coach Pat McDonough at the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia. He finished with 328 career points including 58 goals and 51 assists as a senior. He also had 106 ground balls and 47 takeaways as a senior. Sankey was named a 2011 Under Armour All-American and was tapped the #6 rising senior by Inside Lacrosse.
Captain of his lacrosse team his last two years, he was a U.S. Lacrosse All-America in 2010 and 2011 as well as being named All-State and All-Inter-Ac League selection both years. He was the league’s co-MVP as a senior and copping the team’s MVP award as a junior when he also was named All-Phillylacrosse.com. He led his team in goals and assists in both 2008 and 2010 and in ground balls in 2010. His 50 goals and 48 assists powered Penn Charter to a state semifinal berth in 2008. He has been named an Under Armour Underclass All-America twice and was a 2010 ESPN Rise Warrior 40 Team selection. An honor roll student, he was also honored as a football player by being named All-City in Philadelphia and first-team All-Inter-Ac. He doubled as both a wide receiver and defensive back for Penn Charter.
Jacob Goodall Bailey is the son of Laurie-Anne and Bob Bailey. A 6-5, 215-pound defenseman, he is an alumnus of McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, N.Y., where he played for coach Paul Jordan. As a senior he had 62 ground balls and was named first-team New York Section V as well as the Section V Defensive Player of the Year. Bailey was selected first-team All-Greater Rochester Area Lacrosse League his final three years as a prepster and was the GRALL Co-Player of the Year as a senior. Bailey earned an invitation to try out for the U.S. U19 Team which will compete in the World Championship in Finland in 2012. He was the McQuaid team MVP as a junior and as a freshman he played on a McQuaid team which won the GRALL championship. Last summer, he was named to the Under Armour Underclassmen Games Team for Upstate New York and played for the bronze medal-winning Western team in the Empire State Games. Bailey is a member of the National Honor Society and was named to the 2011 US Lacrosse High School Academic All-America Team.
James Joseph Bitter is the son of Ward and Nancy Bitter and he becomes the second member of his family to play for the Tar Heels, succeeding his brother Billy, who graduated from UNC in 2011. Jimmy is the youngest of the six Bitter siblings and grew up in Manhasset, N.Y., but now lives in Stowe, Vt. A 5-9, 160-pound attackman, he is a graduate of the Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Mass., where he was coached by Chip Davis. A 2011 high school All-America, Bitter will also be played in the National Under Armour Game on July 2. As a senior he led Deerfield in scoring with 75 points on 52 goals and 23 assists. He won the Stephen Lindsay Award as the most valuable attackman in Western New England Division I in 2011, a feat also accomplished by his brother Billy in 2007.
Walker Chafee is the son of Mark and Amelia Chafee. He is a 6-5, 200-pound midfielder who has been chosen as a 2011 Under Armour All-America. Chafee attended Salisbury School in Salisbury, Conn., where he was coached by Bobby Wynne. As a senior, Chafee scored 23 goals and had 20 assists and was tapped as All-League in the Western New England Prep School Lacrosse Association. A two-time All-America selection, he was the Western New England Midfielder of the Year as a junior and earned second-team All-State honors as early as his freshman year in high school. He led Salisbury to back-to-back Western New England Private School Lacrosse Association titles in 2009 and 2010. He’s been an honor roll student every trimester of school and was a dorm prefect as a senior.
Joseph Walter Costigan is the son of Craig and Laura Costigan. A 6-0, 180-pound midfielder, he graduated from New Canaan High School where he played for coach Alex Whitten. He’s a two-time All-America selection as well as being named three-time All-State and three-time All-County. Costigan led New Canaan to a 2010 state semifinalist spot and the 2008 state runner-up position. Costigan was tapped for the 2010 New England Under Armour All-Star Team and was named an ESPN Rise honorable mention selection in 2010. He is an honor roll student and the captain of a New Canaan football team which won four successive state championships.
Defenseman Dane Dickey is the son of Dean and Elena Dickey. At 6-1, 195 pounds, he is a two-sport athlete at Moorestown High School in football and lacrosse and was coached in the latter sport by Baron Wallenhurst where he was a four-year varsity starter and the 2011 team captain. Dickey led Moorestown to state lacrosse championships in 2008 and 2011 and a state finals appearance in 2009. As a senior, Dickey was named first-team All-State by the Newark Star-Ledger, first-team All-Skyland Conference, first-team All-County by the Burlington County Times and first-team All-South Jersey by the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Courier-Post. Dickey was ranked as the #15 defender in the country in 2011 by ESPN Rise Magazine. A four-year scholar-athlete honoree, he graduated with high honors from Moorestown.
Andrew Terence Flynn-Hayes is the son of Andy and Diane Hays. He was born in Santa Barbara, Calif., but now lives in Fairport, N.Y. where he plays for coach Mike Torrelli at Fairport High School. Drew is a 6-0, 185-pound midfielder who earned three varsity letters. As a senior, Hays was the captain of the Fairport lacrosse team while being named first-team New York All-Section V and a U.S. Lacrosse All-America. He had 28 goals and 31 assists for 59 points in his senior campaign. Fairport High School’s 2011 senior athlete of the year, he finished third all-time in school history for career points by a midfielder. He won three team awards, including the prestigious “Jim Nowak Be A Hero” accolade. Hays was selected to play in the 2010 Empire State Games and Under Armour Underclassmen Games. He has also received an invitation to try out for the U.S. Team competing in the 2012 U19 World Championships. As a senior and a sophomore, he led Fairport to the Section V Class A finals in lacrosse. In 2010, Fairport won the Section V title and reached the state finals before losing to West Islip, a team led by current Tar Heel Nicky Galasso. Hays also lettered three times in soccer and two in ice hockey. He led the soccer team to a pair of Section V titles and he was captain of the squad as a senior.
Derek Henson hails from the Cincinnati area. He is the son of Del and Leytrice Henson. A 6-1, 190-pound midfielder, he graduated from William Mason High School where he was coached by Randy Hubbard. Henson played both football and lacrosse as a prepster and as a senior he was named a US Lacrosse All-America while serving as the lacrosse team captain. Henson was the team’s offensive player of the year in his final campaign when he scored 30 goals, passed for eight assists and scooped up 53 ground balls. He was a two-time adidas All-America selection and was named first-team All-Region twice and second-team All-State. He is an honors student at Mason High and has been named the winner of the school’s English award.
Matthew Conor Shannon is the son of Kevin and Carol Shannon. At 6-4, 205 pounds he played defense for Ridgefield High School where his coaches were Roy Colsey and Alfred Meola. Shannon captained both his soccer and lacrosse teams as a senior. As a senior he was named All-FCIAC, first-team All-State and to the US Lacrosse All-America team. He led his team to the conference finals while Ridgefield was the Class L state champion in 2011. After his junior year he was a member of the Under Armour New England Underclassmen All-America Team. He was also ranked among the Top 25 seniors in the nation by ESPN Rise Magazine heading into this senior season. The 2009 team he played on went 20-2 and ended ranked No. 18 by LaxPower.com. Matt is a high honor student and volunteers with the Ridgefield Animal Shelter and SafeRides of Ridgefield.
A 2011 Under Armour All-America selection, Brian Daniel Patrick Sullivan is the son of Gerald and Kathleen Sullivan. He’s 6-3 and 210 pounds and plays defense for coach Mike Burke at Bishop Timon St.-Jude High School in Buffalo, N.Y. Sullivan is a three-time All-Western New York selection and a two-time first-team high school All-America selection and was also first-team All-Metro as a senior. He’s also been named All-Catholic League four times while leading his high school team to a pair of league titles and a state runner-up finish in the Catholic playoffs. Sullivan was twice named an Upstate New York Underclass Under Armour All-America and also competed in the Empire State Games twice. Sullivan is a member of the National Honor Society and has been named an Academic All-America three times in his career.
Chad Tutton comes to Carolina from the Hill Academy in Vaughn, Ontario. The 6-2, 190-pound attackman was coached there by Brodie Merrill and Merrick Thomson. The leading scorer at the Hill Academy, he played club lacrosse for the Courtice Cougars and in 2009 led that team in goal scoring while also being the captain and MVP. He also played ice hockey on the prep and club level. In 2009, he played for the Canadian National Box Lacrosse silver medalists in the Founders Cup and the previous year was on the Canadian National Gold Medal championship team and the Ontario Summer Games gold medal title-winning squad. Tutton attended Dr. Emily Stowe Public School prior to transferring to the Hill Academy. While there he won an Ontario Scholar Athlete Award and was chosen as the school’s Face of the Future as the athlete most likely to succeed.
