St. Joseph’s Prep senior attackman Brad James has committed to play Division I lacrosse at High Point University (N.C.).
James had formerly committed to Division III Dickinson College, but had a change of heart after being contacted by High Point head coach Jon Torpey. Torpey is currently completing his role as top assistant at Dartmouth; the team begins NCAA competition in 2013.
“I went down for a visit and just loved it,” James said. “I loved the campus and I originally wanted to play DI, so it was a good fit.”
James is undecided on a major, but is leaning towards biology.
James is the third Philly senior to commit to High Point, following Garnet Valley defenseman Benny Biaocco and Haverford School defenseman Vince Garman.
He also is the sixth SJP senior to commit to play Division I lacrosse. Others include midfielder Jeff Heath (Delaware), attackman Rob Watts (St. Joseph’s Univ.), face-off specialist/midfielder Jake O’Brien (Lafayette), attackman Cory Scheuerle (Lafayette) and defenseman Connor Dent (Bryant). Also from St. Joe’s, defenseman Clint Barber has committed to Division III Denison.
James helped the Hawks finish 12-8 in 2010 and earn a ranking in the Top 10 in the final PA Media Rankings. He plays club lacrosse for HEADstrong Elite. He said the team expects to challenge defending champion and arch-rival La Salle for the Catholic League title.
“I think we are looking really good,” said James. “We have pretty high standards for our season. We are going to be playing good PA teams and some good out of state teams too.
“We are expecting to make a championship run.”
