From Press Releases and Staff Reports
Marist junior attack Kelly Condon (Abington) has been named a Preseason All-MAAC Women’s choice for 2011.
Condon was the 2010 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year when she led the Red Foxes to the league crown by topping the squad in goals (40), assists (24), points (64) and shots on goal (58). Condon was an All-American defender in high school and was moved to offense as a freshman.
Meanwhile, the Fairfield University Stags have been selected as the preseason favorites to claim the 2011 MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship, as determined by a vote of the conference’s seven head coaches.
Fairfield, last year’s regular season champions, went 6-0 in the conference and 13-5 overall. The Stags were upset, 9-7, by Marist in the 2010 MAAC Championship Game. Fairfield has not lost a regular season game in the MAAC since the 2007 season. Third-year head coach Mike Waldvogel will be aiming for the program’s third conference title and a return to the NCAA Championship.
Fairfield’s Kristen Coleman was chosen as the 2011 Preseason MAAC Player of the Year. Coleman is a three-time First Team All-MAAC and Second Team IWLCA All-Northeast Region selection. She has been named MAAC Offensive Player of the Year twice and was the league’s Rookie of the Year in 2008. She is Fairfield’s all-time leader in points (257), goals (186), and assists (71). Last season Coleman tallied 79 points on 57 goals and 22 assists.
Marist College finished second in the poll with 40 points. Canisius College was third with 34 points. Siena College finished fourth with 27 points, followed by Iona College (23), Manhattan College (15), and Niagara University (13).
The preseason All-MAAC team also consists of Coleman, and Siena’s Caitlin Mikel at attack. The midfielders are Canisius’ Megan Oosting, Fairfield’s Brittany Bare and Chloe Mangan, Iona’s Elizabeth Coholan, and Manhattan’s Chrissy Gutenberger. Fairfield’s Renee L’Heureux, Iona’s Kelsey Sickles, and Siena’s Amanda Corso were selected at defense. Canisius’ Allison Daley was chosen as the goalie.
