Lehigh incoming freshman attacker Carli Sukonik (Harriton) will suit up for Team Liberty in the Champion All-American Showcase, which begins this weekend.
The showcase is held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resorts in Orlando, Fla. Opening ceremonies are on Saturday while the championship game is set for Tuesday (July 19) and will stream live on ESPN3.com.
“This is a terrific opportunity for Carli to gain competitive experience with many soon to be rising stars on the college level,” said Lehigh head coach Jill Redfern (Ursinus College).
Sukonik is the only Patriot League bound student-athlete invited to compete. Competition begins on Sunday with a four-team round robin. Eighty players from 25 states have been selected to four teams that will compete in three pool-play games before championship and consolation games on Tuesday.
A four-time offensive MVP at Harriton High School, Sukonik finished her career with over 300 career goals. She began her career by earning First Team All-Del Val League as a freshman and went on to set six school records during her time at Harriton. She earned US Lacrosse and ESPN RISE Honorable Mention All-America honors.
Nearly 200 of the nation’s top boys’ and girls’ high school lacrosse players – including five from Philly – have been selected by US Lacrosse to compete in the 2011 Champion All-American Showcase, a US Lacrosse event.
The showcases will be held as part of the ESPN RISE Games July 17-22.
The girls’ event features an opening ceremony Saturday, July 16 with a four-team round robin starting July 17. Eighty players from 25 states have been selected to four teams that will compete in three pool-play games before championship and consolation games on Tuesday, July 19. The girls’ championship game will stream live at 2 p.m. ET July 19 on www.espn3.com
Eight players in the girls’ showcase are members of the U.S. under-19 women’s national training team one being goalie Allie Murray, who helped lead Downingtown East to the District 1 championship and a berth in the state finals. The U.S. team will travel to Hannover, Germany, Aug. 3-13, to defend the world title at the Federation of International Lacrosse U19 Women’s World Championships. Players are designated below in rosters.
The other Philly girls competing in the event include Murray (signed with Notre Dame), her former teammate and midfielder Kelly Devlin (Downingtown, North Carolina), and attack Sloan Warren (Baldwin School/Virginia).
The only Philly boy competing is attackman Andrew Blundin, who helped lead Salesianum School to the Delawares state championship this year. Blundin was a captain for the Duke’s Lacrosse Club. Also from just outside the region on Blundin’s Team Spirit will be attackman Nikko Pontrello (St. Augustine Prep/Loyola).
One of the girls’ coaches is Brooke Watson, an assistant at Germantown Academy.
