Maddie Lynch scored four goals while Nathalie Basunga and Alex Poplawski each had three goals as host Springfield-Delco edged Archbishop Carroll, 14-13, today in a non-league game involving two teams ranked in the PA Media Rankings.
The Cougars – ranked No. 5 in the Media Rankings – improved to 13-2, while No. 2 Carroll fell to 12-3.
Courtney Kennedy added two goals for the Cougars while Rachel Charamella and Kate Ryan scored once each. Kristy Reid made eight saves.
The Cougars dominated the draw controls, 19-10, as Basunga had five draws, Kennedy four and Lynch four.
“The key to the game was draw controls,” said Springfield-Delco coach Keith Broome. “That was the difference. We were able to get the ball and keep it away from them.”
Carroll coach Lorraine Beers agreed: “The draw controls just killed us. They had the ball and we kept playing in the hole.”
Natalie Schmitt led Carroll with four goals and two assists while sister Hannah Schmitt added four goals and one assist and Rachel Flynn had three goals and an assist. Maddie Lesher and Kerry Newby scored once each.
Carroll went ahead 10-8 with three straight goals, but the Cougars scored a pair to tie, 10-10, and later forged ahead 14-11 with several minutes to pay before holding off a late charge.
