Staff Report

Registration is open for the Ricky Whelan Dukes Developmental Program, an instructional series that leads to the tryouts for the Duke’s Lacrosse Club.

The program – featuring six sessions – is tentatively scheduled to begin on Sept. 11 and continue for six Sundays at Harriton High. The times are tentatively schedule for 4-6 p.m.

Walkup registration will start at 3:30 p.m. The Dukes tryouts are tentatively slated for Oct. 23 at Haverford College.

Whelan was a Dukes alum who died suddenly in his sleep six years ago. He exemplifies the quality of player and person the Dukes wish to create and associate with.

As it approaches the next stage in player development, the Dukes believe in a program that provides each player with fundamentals instruction, especially in the off-season.

This program is for intermediate to advanced high school players. Advanced 8th grade or 7th graders may attend but must contact Coach Jason Christmas with playing experience to authorize participation.

The clinics will be emphasizing high intensity drills and skill sets to improve players’ reaction time and decision making in unsettled/settled transition situations. Up tempo pace will be encouraged defensively and offensively from 1v1 situations to 2v1 all the way up to 6v6 settled sets.

These sessions will give players preparation for the Dukes tryouts while improving lacrosse IQ and field sense.

To receive a discount ($60), it is encouraged to preregister for the clinics and avoid massive walkup lines at walkup registration.

Preregistration fees ($450 for 6 Sunday sessions or $75 a session) can be mailed and must be received before September 10. please send Dukes Waiver and Dukes Player Info sheets (

Walkup registration is $85 per Sunday or $510 for six Sundays.

The program is headed by Coach Ebe Helm -Defensive fundamentals and techniques; Jason and John Christmas-offensive skill sets and techniques; and Eric Gregg (Head Coach St. Joseph’s Prep and LEAPS co-founder), goalie coach/instruction
