Trevor Hornby and Damian Sobieski each had three goals and two assists to lead host Avon Grove to a 10-9 victory over Springfield-Delco Thursday night in the second round of the District 1 boys’ lacrosse tournament.
The win vaults the fifth-seeded Red Devils (16-2) into the quarterfinals Saturday against Pennsbury at Henderson High at 2 p.m. Pennsbury surprised fourth-seeded Downingtown East, 8-6.
Sobieski and Eric Waibel scored late goals to break an 8-8 for Avon Grove, which also got great work at the face-off X from Anthony DiNenno (17 of 22) and eight saves from Tommy Malone.
Joe Venit led the Cougars (11-8) with three goals and an assist while Dan O’Connell made 15 saves.
Abington 11, Great Valley 9
Ryan Ambler led a balanced attack with two goals and an assist as the visiting Ghosts downed the Patriots in the second round.
Abington (15-5), the No. 9 seed, earns a date with top-seeded and two-time defending champion Conestoga Saturday at Henderson High at noon. Great Valley, the No. 8 seed, finishes at 15-5 after seeing its 12-game win streak snapped.
Matt Figueroa, Matt Lomady, Brian Gallagher and Dan Lomady each scored twice for the Ghosts and Travis O’Connor made 10 saves.
Chris Duffy and Bubba Kluver each scooped eight groundballs for Abington.
For Great Valley, Eric Gartner had three goals and three assists and Timmy Lamb scored twice while Nick DiPiano made 15 saves.
