Marist under the direction of second-year head coach Jessica O’Brien, announced the signing of 10 student-athletes for the upcoming 2012 season. The class consists of players from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts and Florida.
“I am very excited to welcome our freshman class to the Marist Lacrosse family. They have all worked diligently both on and off the field during their high school careers and I anticipate the same work ethic from each individual at the collegiate level” said O’Brien. “The addition of this class will help to bring this program to the next level, and I look forward to working with them all.”
Christine Astarita – Defense – Unionville/Kennett Square, Pa. – Astarita comes to the Red Foxes after a successful interscholastic career at Unionville High School. During her sophomore and junior seasons, Astarita was a member of a defensive backfield that led their program to two consecutive state semifinals, including an undefeated run in 2009. Individually, she has earned Academic All-American and Second Team All-League honors, as well as participated with Team Philadelphia in the 2010 Under Armour Underclassmen Games. Astarita was a member of the National Honor Society.
Jackie DiMaria – Attack – Half Hollow Hills West/Dix Hills, N.Y. – DiMaria comes to Marist as a three-sport athlete from Half Hollow Hills West High School. A four-year member of the lacrosse team, she posted 75 points, on 53 goals and 22 assists in her senior season. For her efforts during her junior and senior campaigns, DiMaria earned All-League honors. A captain during her final two seasons, DiMaria also excelled in the classroom where she earned the Gold Key Award, as well as the Merchant Marines Scholar Athlete Award during her senior year. She also played four years of varsity soccer and ran varsity track for three.
Sheri Fauvell – Defense – Moorestown/Moorestown, N.J. – Fauvell joins the Red Foxes from the storied Moorestown High School girl’s lacrosse program. This past spring she helped her squad earn the Burlington County Scholastic, South Jersey Group III and New Jersey State Group III Championships, as well as the runner-up position in the Tournament of Champions. Overall, the team finished the year ranked 14th in the United States. Individually, she earned first team accolades in All-League and All-County voting, as well as a second team nod on the All-South Jersey squad. Academically, Fauvell was named a two-time Academic All-American.
Liz Holmes – Goalie – Longmeadow/Longmeadow, Mass. – Holmes comes from a decorated interscholastic program as well. As a three-year starting goalkeeper, she backstopped Longmeadow High School to three consecutive Western Massachusetts Championships and state final berths. In recognition of her senior season were she led a defense that allowed 7.4 goals per game and made 152 saves, Holmes was named to ESPNBoston’s MIAA Girls Lacrosse All-State Team. In the classroom, she was an honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society.
Emily Leonard – Midfield – Brookfield/Brookfield, Conn. – An accomplished athlete from the Connecticut lacrosse ranks, Leonard joins the Red Fox program. An all-league honoree throughout her four years of high school action, she capped her career with a 123 point senior season on 81 goals and 42 assists. In recognition of her success Leonard was named First Team All-State Class M, as well as SWC All-Conference. An award winner in the classroom as well, she also earned Brookfield High School’s Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference Scholar Athlete Award and was a member of the National and Spanish Honor Societies.
Sabrina Mattera – Midfield – Wantagh/Wantagh, N.Y. – Mattera joins the Red Foxes and continues the program’s lineage with Wantagh High School. Head Coach Jessica O’Brien, as well as this past spring’s captain Jessica Guarino are alums of the school. A three year varsity midfielder, Mattera finished her career with a total of 71 goals and 23 assists, and honors over her junior and senior seasons. As a junior she named to the All-Conference team and progressed to All-Nassau County Honorable Mention status as a senior. Mattera was a member of the National and Foreign Language Honor Societies, as well as the National Honor Roll. In her senior year, she was awarded the President’s Award for Educational Achievement.
Tina Pumo – Defense – Oceanside/Oceanside, N.Y. – A gifted three sport athlete from Oceanside High School, Pumo is poised to join Marist’s defense ranks. She was a four year starter on each of her varsity lacrosse, soccer and basketball teams. Pumo’s success on the lacrosse field was recognized after every season as she earned All-Conference honors four times and All-County as a senior. Oceanside’s Best Female Athlete for the Class of 2011, Pumo was a two-time captain of her lacrosse and basketball teams. In the classroom she was a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society and Honor Roll.
Erin Schroeder – Attack – Vero Beach/Vero Beach, Fla. – Schroeder brings an impressive resume with her up north to Poughkeepsie following a decorated four year varsity career at the four-time Florida State Champion Vero Beach High School. The program was ranked amongst the top 20 in the nation during all four of Schroeder’s seasons, including a top five rank in 2010. Beginning with earning the team’s Rookie of the Year award, she developed into a player, who would garner a nod on the Honorable Mention U.S. Lacrosse All-American Regional team as a senior. Schroder scored 73 of her 194 career goals during her final campaign. In recognition of her success on the field and in the classroom she was named an Academic All-American following her senior season.
Ellie Schwab – Midfield – Conard/West Hartford, Conn. – Schwab joins the Red Foxes as a highly-regarded player from the Central Connecticut area. Named as one of the Top 10 Girl’s Lacrosse players in Connecticut by the New Haven Register, she was a two-time Central Connecticut All-Conference honoree following her junior and senior seasons. Noted for her strong two-way play, Schwab was able to notch 45 goals and six assists during her senior season, while playing an important role in Conard High School’s defensive alignment.
Kirsten Viscount – Attack – Smithtown West/Smithtown, N.Y. – Viscount comes to Marist as the most successful goal and point scorer in Smithtown West High School history. A five-year member of the varsity squad, she earned All-Suffolk County honors in four of those seasons. During her junior and senior seasons Viscount was both her team’s captain, as well as MVP. Smithtown West’s Athlete of the Year in 2011, she also excelled in her studies. Viscount was a member of the National and Spanish Honor Societies.
