The Iona College lacrosse program is pleased to announce its incoming class for the 2012 season. Head coach Michelle Mason and the Gaels will welcome 11 newcomers to the squad for the spring competition season.

“I am extremely excited to announce the addition of the class of 2015 to the Iona Women’s Lacrosse program,” said Mason. “These 11 players will give us the depth and talent necessary to reach our goal of taking home the MAAC Championship. Many of these newcomers will make an immediate impact on the field and will be vying for starting positions come spring.”

The Gaels will have five new faces at the midfield position: Bernadette Gennaro of Havertown, PA; Olivia McCarthy of Duxbury, MA; Melanie Murphy of Syracuse, NY; Casey Palmer of Seaford, NY; and Meghan Testoni of Clinton, CT.

Gennaro was named Second Team All-Catholic in 2011 and All-MainLine Honorable Mention in 2010 as a player for Archbishop Carroll High School. McCarthy won four Patriot League Championships with Duxbury High School while also playing for MASS ELITE Lacrosse Club Team from 2007 to 2010, and represented Eastern Lower New England at the Women’s Division National Lacrosse Tournament in 2009 and 2010. Also a varsity ice hockey player, McCarthy won the Division II State Championship and is a three-time SEMGL Ice Hockey Champion.

Joining Iona at attack are Chandler Borrosh, Alanna Johnson, and Marisa Tomsky. Borrosh, from Portsmouth, RI, was a four-year starter at Portsmouth High school and played for RI Metacomets lacrosse team. Following her senior season, Borrosh earned the Academic Award for lacrosse and was named to the Division II First Team. Johnson, hailing from Middle Island, NY, was a three-year starter at Longwood High School where whe was one of the leading scorers as a senior. Tomsky, a New Jersey native, was named one of Star Ledger’s 2011 Top Players to Watch as an All-Area and All-Conference award winner at North Hunterdon High School.

Murphy’s West Genessee High School squad advanced to the NY State tournament three times and Murphy was named the Brine Player of the Game in the State Semifinal as a junior. Palmer has earned All-Conference and All-County awards playing for Seaford High School and is ranked in the top 25 in assists on Long Island. While at The Morgan School, Testoni has been named to the All-Conference First and Second Teams as well as Second Team All-State and a Scholar Athlete. A three-sport athlete, Testoni was also a starter on the basketball and soccer squads.

Rachel Vasquez from Holbrook, NY will be the lone newcomer added to Iona’s defensive unit. Vasquez was a four-year starter at Sachem North High School, receiving an All-Tournament award as a senior.

Goalkeepers Blaire Nathanson and Nancy Ibrahim will join returning sophomore Maria Ortiz at the position. Nathanson, from South Brunswick High School in NJ, was named the 2011 Vikings Defensive Player of the Year and is the school’s all-time leader in several categories.
