Zachary (Lower Merion) leads list of 13 recruits for Vermont men

Lower Merion’s Ahmad Zachary leads the list of 13 incoming recruits for the University of Vermont men’s lacrosse team. Head coach Ryan Curtis made the announcement Thursday.

Last season Vermont returned to the America East Playoffs for the first time since 2003. The Catamounts earned the No. 4 seed and faced top-seeded and No. 8 ranked Stony Brook in the first round.

The recruits:

Zachary, a 5-9, 185-pound midfielder, was a team captain as a senior at Lower Merion where he recorded 35 goals and 30 assists. Earned All-Central League, All-Main Line and All-Friends School League recognition in high school. As a junior Zachary was named to the All-Central League Team after recording 17 goals, 25 assists and 50 ground balls.

Derek Braig (Reisterstown, Md.) a 6-3, 185-pound midfielder/defender has spent the last three seasons at St. Paul’s School in Brooklandville, Md. He also played hockey and soccer for the Crusaders and was named to the MIAA All-Conference team in hockey twice.

Mark D’Anthony (Hampstead, Md.) is a 5-9, 160-pound attackman that comes to Vermont from Calvert Hall High School in Baltimore, Md. He was named the Cardinals 2008 Offensive MVP. D’Anthony made the adidas All-American Team for Baltimore. He also played football in high school for two seasons.

Kodie Englehart (Coronado, Calif.) is a 6-1, 154-pound midfielder that played lacrosse at Coronado High School in Coronado, Calif. He was named a High School All-American in both 2009 and 2010. As a senior Englehart was named the San Diego City Conference Player of the Year and was a CIF First Team selection. Ranked #5 among the Elite 25 seniors by He also played football in high school and was a team captain and the team MVP as a senior as a quarterback/safety.

David Freemyer (Washington, D.C.) a 6-5, 225-pound midfielder comes to UVM after playing at the Potomac School in McLean, Va. A team captain as a senior, he was also named the Potomac Athlete of the Year. Freemyer was an all-league selection in 2009. He also played soccer and basketball in high school.

Chris Gavitt (Rensselaer, N.Y.) is a 5-9, 160-pound defenseman who comes to Vermont after playing a year at both Clarkson University and Hudson Valley Community College. He was a two-time All-Section II selection and earned all-league honors as a senior at Columbia High School in East Greenbush, N.Y.

Hayward Giraud (Mercer Island, Wash.) a 5-8, 190-pound goalkeeper comes to Vermont all the way from Mercer Island, Wash. He was named first team all-state as a senior and earned a spot on the second team as a junior. Giraud was a three-time team captain and named team defensive MVP as a senior after posting a .677 save percentage. Ranked #14 among the Elite 25 seniors by

Thomas Martin (Essex Fells, N.J.) comes to Vermont from West Essex High School in North Caldwell, N.J. A captain as a senior, he earned first team all-conference honors after scoring 38 goals and handing out 27 assists. As a junior Martin, a 5-10, 145-pound attackman, added 26 goals and 21 assists. He also played soccer in high school, as he was named all-county as a senior.

Connor McNamara (Winchester, Mass.) a 5-9, 160-pound attackman comes to Vermont from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, N.H. As a senior he scored 73 goals and added eight assists, as he was named a Prep School All-Star. During the 2008-09 season at Winchester High School in Winchester, Mass., he set a school record for 70 goals in a season. His father Tom played hockey at Vermont from 1973-77.

Andrew Muscara (Chandler, Ariz.) is a 6-0, 185-pound midfielder who played for Chandler High School in Arizona. He was a two-time all-state selection and was an All-American nominee as a senior. Scored 30 goals and added 17 assists as a senior. Ranked #6 among the Elite 25 seniors by

Mike Quinn (Las Vegas, Nev.) a 5-10, 175-pound midfielder comes to Vermont from Palo Verde High School in Las Vegas. He was named First Team All-Nevada in each of his last three years of high school and served as team captain in 2009. Quinn also played football and basketball in high school.

Peter Santulli (Hinsdale, Ill.) a 5-10, 165-pound midfielder comes to Vermont from Hinsdale Central High School in Hinsdale, Ill. Named all-state and the team’s player of the year as a senior captain. Santulli recorded 78 points (36 goals and 42 assists) as a senior. He led the team with 66 points (24g, 42a) as a junior when he was named all-conference as well as the team’s midfielder of the year.

Brian Slevin (Setauket, N.Y.) a 6-1, 220-pound defender comes to Vermont from Ward Melville High School in Setauket, N.Y. He also played football and ran track in high school.
