Recent Abington graduate Elizabeth Wilson (defender) has signed a letter of intent to play Division II lacrosse at national runner-up West Chester University.

Wilson, a first team Suburban One National Conference pick this year, helped the Ghosts win their fourth straight league crown and advance to the second round of the District 1 tournament. She also earned US Lacrosse Academic All-American for the second straight year.

Wilson originally committed to Division I Delaware, but decided to look elsewhere when popular Blue Hens coach Kim Ciarrocca (Plymouth Whitemarsh/Temple) retired at the end of the season.

“I went to an official (visit) at West Chester and really liked the coaches and girls,” said Wilson, who will major in Special Education and Middle Grades Education. “And it made sense to go to an in-state school that’s an education (training) school.”

At West Chester, Wilson will join Philly recruits Kelsey Smith (Boyertown, defender), Jordan Heidelbaugh (Boyertown, attack), Jessica Henderson (Henderson, goalie) and Julianne Jochym (Downingtown East, attack).

Wilson said the 2010 season was most gratifying. Abington – hit hard by the loss of standout Kate Cooper (knee injury) – early in the year, won its final eight league games and then toppled Downingtown West, 14-12, in district play. The key win was a 12-11 triumph over co-champion Council Rock North – the team that handed the Ghosts 10-7 loss early in the year.

“It was shocking when Kate got injured in the first scrimmage,” said Wilson. “But we all came together.”
