Casey Powell scored four goals and Jordan Hall dished six assists as the host Orlando Titans defeated the Philadelphia Wings, 13-8, Friday night in the opening game of the National Lacrosse League season before 8,145 at Amway Arena.
Philadelphia’s Drew Westervelt led the team with three goals and offseason pickup Dan Teat added two goals and two assists.
The Wings struck first on the power play, when Teat beat Titans goalie Mat Vinc 4:49 into the first quarter. Orlando responded three minutes later on a goal from Bill Greer. Drew Westervelt went on to score two straight to give Philadelphia a one goal edge before the Titans offense awoke.
Orlando, led by Powell, tallied the final two goals of the first quarter and the first five of the second to take a lead it would not relinquish. While the Titans’ offense kicked into high gear, their goaltender was also at his best. Vinc stopped 16 of Philadelphia’s 17 shots in the second quarter to allow his team to carry a five-goal lead into halftime. Overall,Vinc saved 41 of 49 shots and Philadelphia goalie Brandon Miller stopped 33 of 46 shots.
Each team scored five goals in the second half, but it was not offensive production that highlighted the latter part of the contest. There were over 60 minutes of penalties, including three fights, and multiple ejections in the final two quarters of play.
Bill McGlone (Ridley) and Mat Giles each added one goal and two assists for the Wings while Jason Crosbie had a goal and an assist.
