Ned Crotty and Brendan Mundorf each had three goals and one assist while Alex Smith won 18 of 22 face-offs as the US National team claimed a 15-8 victory over an All-Star team representing the Philadelphia Lacrosse Association (PLA) tonight in a special men’s exhibition game before a standing room only crowd at Lehigh

University.

The game was the second of only three exhibitions for the US squad is it gears for the Federation of International Lacrosse World Championships July 15-24 at Manchester, England.

The game drew a crowd of over 1,000 to Banko Field.  The US

squad will play its last  exhibition game July 8 when it faces the Major League Lacrosse All-Stars in Boston. That game will be televised live on ESPN2.

Team USA led, 3-1, after one period and 7-2 at halftime. The Philly squad pulled within 9-6 after three periods.

The squads had significant Philly connections as both teams featured many Philly products and players with ties to Philly professional and college teams. One of team USA’s players was midfielder Kevin Cassese, a former member of the Major League Lacrosse two-time champion Philadelphia Barrage who is also the head coach at Lehigh.

Others included Smith, a Delaware grad who had 10 groundballs;  goalie Brian Dougherty (Episcopal Academy/Maryland/GMH); defenseman Kyle Sweeney (Springfield-Delco/Georgetown/Wings/Boston Cannons); defenseman D.J. Driscoll (Malvern Prep/Notre Dame/ Chicago Machine); defenseman Shawn Nadelen (Wings/Johns Hopkins/Towson associate coach); midfielder Max Seibald (Wings/Cornell/Denver Outlaws) and attackman Drew Westervelt (Philadelphia Wings/UMBC/Denver Outlaws). One of the Team USA assistants is La Salle College High assistant and former Wings great and Wings/Barrage head coach Tony Resch.

Bryant coach Mike Pressler is the head coach.

Dougherty had five saves while sharing the goaltending duties with Adam Fullerton (five saves). Paul Rabil added two goals and two assists while Casey Powell and Matt Striebel each had two goals and an assist. Westervelt had two goals and Seibald added one.

After the PLA stars got within 9-6, Striebel, Powell, Mundorf and Crotty scored in a brilliant four-minute span to give the USA a comfortable 13-6 cushion.

Garrett Thul, a rising sophomore at Army, led the US team with three goals. Kevin Crowley (Stony Brook) added a goal and two assists and Philly’s Kevn Kaminski (Strath Haven/Delaware) had a goal and an assist while Philly’s John Haldy (Haverford School/Virginia) and Chris Layne (Malvern Prep/North Carolina) each scored once. Alex Hewit (former Princeton great, New York Athletic Club) had eight saves in goal while Mark Manos (Salesianum School/Drexel) stopped four shots – several on close-in opportunities.

The PLA All-Star team was coached by John Nostrant (Haverford College).
