The Methacton boys’ team spent a recent Saturday scooping up trash, weeds and other unwanted materials rather than lacrosse balls.
For four hours, nearly the entire group of 50 varsity and JV players on the team cleaned up the nature center at Audubon Elementary in the Methacton district. The project was part of a service initiative by first-year coach Nat Ryan.
The center was in great disrepair from several years of overgrowth. The players weeded, fixed gravel paths, fixed planting beds, cleaned the pond and its surrounding area and repaired woodwork so students could use the center for learning this spring.
To recognize their efforts in the community, the Warriors have been named the season’s first United Sports Team of the Week. The award is given to a team that performs community service or raised money for a worthwhile cause.
“I had been looking for some type of community service for the guys to give back to the community,” said Ryan. “The community has been very supportive of our program and and I wanted the project to be reflective of the quality of the guys on the team.
“The nature center is an area for growing plants and managing a pond. They brought it back to where the kids can plant again. They really did work hard and it was refreshing to see them get after it and work together as a group.
“The place was in pretty stark contrast from when we arrived to when we left. It was fun from that aspect.”
