Both Philly teams opened play today with two losses in the Under Armour Underclassmen Games at Towson University.

The boys’ team dropped two heartbreaking overtime decisions. First, they fell to Baltimore, 10-9 in overtime, and then they dropped a 9-8 decision to Upstate New York in overtime.

The Philly girls’ team fell to Baltimore, 15-6, in its first game and then fell to Upstate New York, by a 10-9 tally in overtime.

Both teams close play Sunday against New England at 11 a.m. The teams must win to have any chance to advance to the championship round.

In the loss to Baltimore, Philly’s Matt Walters (rising senior/Haverford School/committed to Syracuse), Carl Walrath (rising senior/Haverford School/Virginia) and Matt Rambo (rising sophomore/Abington) tallied two goals each and Joey Sankey (rising senior/Penn Charter/North Carolina) was a huge playmaker. Midfielders Jeff Heath (rising senior/St. Joseph’s Prep/Delaware) and Tanner Scott (rising senior/Conestoga/Duke) were also keys while goalies Conor Kelly (rising senior/Haverford School/Notre Dame) and Dustin Keen (rising senior/Downingtown West/not committed) were strong in the cage.

Baltimore, down 5-2 at halftime, eventually tied the game at 9-9 with 1:00 left in regulation on a goal by Ryan Tucker (Gilman/Virginia). Philly won the opening face-off in overtime, but after a turnover, Tyler Dimes (Hereford) fed Jay Carlson (St. Paul’s/Maryland) for the game-winner.

In all eight teams from different regions around the country are competing in the tourney, which features the top underclassmen in the country.
