Damian Sobieski pumped in six goals and Trevor Hornby added a goal and six assists as visiting Avon Grove defeated Strath Haven, 10-7, today in a District 1 boys’ lacrosse playoff opener.
The win lifted the Devils to 13-4 and gave the program its first playoff victory ever. Eric Waibel added two goals and Tim Golder scored once for Avon Grove, which advances to face second-seeded Abington Thursday in the second round.
Mark Dolphin had four goals to lead the Panthers.
Owen J. Roberts 12, Upper Merion 7
Kohl Batdorf had three goals and two assists and Tyler Graham scored three goals while John Pennell added two goals and three assist for the Wildcats in the win.
Nate Hare had two goals and an assist for the Vikings while Luc Minnich and James Brennan added two goals each. Trevor Kupecky, a freshman, had two assists and finished the year with a whopping 68 assists overall.
Downingtown East 10, Wissahickon 5
Rob Fitzgerald had three goals and two assists and Shane Sturgis contributed one goal and five assists while Jeff Zelinski and Aaron Murphy each scored twice to lead the host Cougars (10-9).
Jeff Gebert and Garret Rosiek each scored twice for the Trojans.
Lower Merion 13, Holy Ghost Prep 8
Jordan Wolf pumped in six goals and has one assist while Andrew Mongeluzzi added four goals and one assists and Hank Altschuler made 13 saves to lead the Aces (11-8).
Jeremy Omrod led the Firebirds with three goals and one assist and Andrew Cacchio added two goals and two assists while Colin Becker added two goals.
Garnet Valley 14, Upper Darby 7
Mike Montella had five goals and three assists and Eric Warden added one goal and seven assist to become the school’s all-time leading scorer (347 points) as the Jaguars claimed the win.
Ricky Lehman added three goals and Steve Smyrl had a goal and three assists while Adam Mondell scored twice.
Jake Syre led the Royals with a hat trick.
Downingtown West 9, Plymouth Whitemarsh 4
Eric Sanders and Connor Mullen each had three goals and two assists while Ryan Higgins scored three goals and Dustin Keen turned aside eight shots to lead the Whippets.
Colin Joka had two goals and one assist and Kevin Hennessy made 14 saves for the Colonials.
Radnor 12, Boyertown 3
Jeff Puckette had two goals and two assists while Ben Junior, Spencer Lussier and Harrison Lawrence each scored twice as the Red Raiders cruised to the victory.
Carlos Palaez, Zach Greenberg, Chris Major and Jordan Berstein led the defense in front of goalie Brendan Manderack (six saves).
Tyler Furman, Sam O’Herrick and Zach Reichart each scored once for the Bears.
Spring-Ford 12, Council Rock North 4
Brian Bock had five goals and two assists and Drew Thomas added three goals and two assists while Josh Sutterfield had a goal, an assist and won 11 of 11 face-offs while scooping 10 groundballs to lead the Rams.
Jared Novia posted 10 saves to earn the victory.
Tyler Shablin and Dan Brenner each scored twice for the Indians.
Penncrest 8, Unionville 5
Craig Kashner scored three goals and Tom Kelly added a pair of goals to lead the Lions to the victory.
For Unionville, Tyler Simigran and James Moss each scored twice.
Hatboro-Horsham 9, Bishop Shanahan 7
Eddie Coombs scored three goals and Ran Kreston had two goals and two assists while Greg Cutilli tallied twice to lead the Hatters.
Dino Vitale also was a standout in the cage with 14 saves. Dom DeFazio and Ryan Mullen led the HH defense.
Michael Thompson led the Eagles with three goals and Jordan McGinty had two goals and one assist while Kyle Sullivan made 10 saves and Jake Farrell paced the defense with three groundballs.
Ridley 11, Upper Dublin 4
Ryan O’Kane scored four goals while Eric Streicher and Kevin Garling each scored twice and Tyler Johnston contributed a goal and four assists for the Green Raiders.
Alex Faust scored twice for the Cardinals.
