Team Philly scored twice in 10 seconds in the closing moments to overcome Syracuse, 7-6, today in action at the adidas National Lacrosse Classic at the Maryland Soccerplex in Boyds.
Kevin Allen (Salisbury School) and Zack Logan (Downingtown West) scored two goals each, while Michael Buysse (Malvern Prep), Colin Joka (Plymouth Whitemarsh), and James Martin (Georgetown Prep) added a goal each for Philly (2-1 overall in round robin play).
The adidas Lacrosse Classic features underclassmen teams from 20 regions. The top teams will advance to the second round of play Thursday. The Philly team is being coached by Josh Hanlon (Neshaminy). Dozens of college coaches also are on hand, making the event one of the nation’s top recruiting showcases.
Philly opened play today with a 5-3 triumph over Georgia. Joka (Plymouth Whitemarsh) led the attack with two goals while Allen, Austen Freeborn (Salesianum School, DE) and Mike Leyden (Haverford High) added one apiece. Philly’s loss came to Washington, 9-2. Joka and Stephen Chapman (Washington Township, NJ) scored for Team Philly, which needs a win tonight to advance to the second day of tournament action.
Meanwhile, the Central PA team – which features several Philly players – is off to a 3-0 start. Central Penn (3-0) became the first team with three wins after edging Maryland Prep. Quint Miller (Manheim Township) led the charge with three goals, and Rob Wertz (Manheim Township) added two. Andrew Caldwell (Penncrest) and Michael Ondrusek.(Hempfield) each scored once.
Central Penn also edged SoCal, 8-7, as Miller popped in two goals for the winners. Others who got into the scoring act included Caldwell and Rob Watts (St. Joseph’s Prep), Tyler Aunon (Paul VI, Va), Branden Kessler (Red Lion), Ondrusek, and Wertz.
After a scoreless first half, Central Penn also pulled out a 5-1 win over Illinois as Kessler scored twice and added an assist. Central Penn also got tallies from Nick Canarelli (Lancaster Catholic), Aunon and Ondrusek.
